tranny going bad? tranny done?
well i was starting my car today, and i heard this noise.
when i pushed in my clutch it would stop, but when i let it out it would start up again. very faint noise, not that noticable..
at first i thought it might be my throwout bearing, but that would be making noise when i was engaged, not releasing the clutch....
my cousin said it sounded like my bearings, and that they prob had flat spots or soemthing ( i forget what he exactly said)....
so my question is, what can i expect? is my tranny going bad or what? how much would it cost to get it fixed, or should i just ditch it and go Bseries motor/trans ? i was planning on LS anyways...but not during the winter...
(BTW: im talking about a d16a, stock 91 si motor)
thanks for the input in adavnce.

throwout bearings make noise when they are not engaged, when they start to go south. How many miles on your car?Original clutch setup?etc.
Take notice to when the noise disappears along your clutch pedal travel.
Is it when you lightly rest your foot on the pedal or when you actually depress it fully? If it goes away with just a little travel, then it's probably your throwout. If fully depressed, then probably your input shaft bearing.

probably your throw out bearing. i wouldnt pay soem one else to do this task, any clutch/tranny job is gonan cost you atleast 700 bucks (well if you live near me). its an easy job and only requires basic mechanical skills. all you will find yourself doing is yanking some suspension components, sliding the axels out, unwiring your tranny(3 wires and some grounds), removing stuff in the way liek battery, starter, speedo/clutch cable. Then all u gotta do is drop it down, pull it out, and you're there. Sounds like a lot, but i honestly had only done intakes and short shifters before, seriously NOTHING difficult, infac ti couldnt even do my own brakes prior to this! Now, i spent HALF of what a shop would charge, and i have a toolbox full of some real nice tools(went all out and spent about 350 on tools) and i have picked up a lot of knowledge and mechanic confidence along the way. if you have ANY questions feel free to AIM me at ferencz03

i think its your input shaft as other stated same problems with mine...been using the tranny for 2k miles so far. mechanics said i have couple thousands miles before it goes ka boom. it only cost 177 to change trannys here
99% sure it's your Input Shaft bearing (aka, clutch housing mainshaft bearing).
It's DEFINITELY not the throwout (clutch release) bearing, as that would make noise when you pushed the clutch in, and what you have is the opposite.

Throwouts also make noise when the clutch is let out and the fork is not putting any pressure on it. Yes, ISB's go bad, but its a lot more serious job than a throwout bearing change.

Lets see he said when the pedal was up, meaning the throw out bearing is doing nothing, its just sitting there. So how could that be it ?

not to thread jack or anything but i have a hydro b16 tranny and today when i was backing into my driveway it made like a harsh grinding noise and then kicked it out of gear. I thought that maybe i didnt have it in gear all the way but i did it again and the noise came back. I put it into first to pull forward and then when i engaged the clutch to take it out of first it made almost the same noise. This is the first time it has ever done this. any thoughts?

Seeing as I was havin the same problem with my tranny, and a friends, and both times new throwout bearings did nothing to remedy the problem, I have to say its the ISB. I got 2 trannys sittin in my garage about to be ripped a apart to see what bad ISB's look like and how hard the process is of changin them. There's another post on here by someone whose done it, has pics and everthing, I forget his name right now. I'll post about it.....when i get to it........some day.

I linked it in my first post. about 7 above this one. Bauleycivic did the write-up, although it's for a hydro D-series. You'll notice that the innards of the cable Ds look almost identical, and everything in his thread applies. Also, a helm factory service manual is a near-must for a first timer. Torque values and such....
