check to make sure that white plastic part is still in the plug on the VSS.
clean it out with pressurized air.
i did the same thing and my cluster wouldn't work for like 2 weeks. then one day out of nowhere it started working and knock on wood, hasn't failed me yet

I've got the same problem. I borrowed and changed the VSS to no avail. I've heard that the speedo (and/or chip contained in it) can actually go so that's the next part I'm gonna try swapping.
I've got the same problem with mine. They replaced the sensor in the tranny right after I bought the car and it would work every once in awhile. All summer it worked fine, and now that the weather's getting colder it hardly ever works. Anyone have a picture of the speedo wiring so I can check it? where's the VSS located?
I posted this previously - hope it helps
Before ANYTHING: search on VSS (search is a wonderful thing here on HT)
I had the same trouble (my speedo kept jumping on and off) and spent 3 months troubleshooting until I finally got it...
1. Check the VSS connector (3-wire plastic plug). It sits on top of your tranny, right behind the bock. If the connection is loose OR the pickup wires not in good shape, you won't get a speed signal - Make sure that's in order
2. VSS itself: Possibly the sensor is bad - Try swapping in a different one and see if that fixes the problem
3. GROUNDS: Check ALL of the engine grounds, especially the big tranny ground that is found right around the passenger-side engine mount. Make sure they're tight. Also check the under-hood battery connections, and battery connections to the under-hood fuse box. Check the alternator connection, etc.
4. Fuses: Some people had success with this problem by checking and/or replacing fuses both under-hood and under-dash.
5. Cluster connection: Take off the dash trim and pull out your cluster, make sure the two main plugs going into your cluster are tight
6. Cluster GROUND: There's a wiring harness ground directly behind your cluster (black plug) - make sure that's connected well
7. SPEEDOMETER: Try swapping in a different cluster.
Turns out my problem was the Speedo itself. Only after the THIRD cluster I tried I realized the speedometer was the culprit. I installed a speedo that worked into my original cluster and haven't had any problems since...

I have that same problem as well. All summer long i had no problem, but when it gets colder it F***'s up..
This is what i found out. behind the odometer counter ( speed & milage) there's a circuit bored that clips on behind the odometer inside the cluster. alot of times that little circuit bored will screew up and needs to be replace. if you can find a cluster of your car ( ex: EG) or what ever, try to replace that little ciruit bored. That's what i did and presto it works and stuff
if you would like the pictures of the back of the odometer just send me a pm.
