Default Aftermarket ignition

I have been given by a very generous donor a Crane HI-6 DSR ignition. While I am not sure that a higher power ignition is needed on an IT level D16A6, it does offer a two-stage rev limiter which could be very handy for standing starts. Of course, in order to use it, it looks like I'd have to use an aftermarket coil, modify the distributor cap, etc.
Does anyone use an aftermarket inigition in H4/ITA around here and have any good/bad experiences, or opinions about it?
I usually try to K.I.S.S., so I am wandering if this is worth the added complexity and additional point of failure.

thanks.

Well ignition wise it's been a pretty general rule the stock Honda ignition is good for up to about 400whp. So is it necessary? No. Will it give you an improvements? Probably not. The two-step is a nice feature though. There are much easier ways to do a two-step, but they might not be legal to add where adding an aftermarket ignition is legal.

If it's legal to add like an MSD 2-step or something similar, I would just go that route.

thanks for the info. Given the rush of responses, I am thinking that most people haven't bothered. Besides, I think that a staging rev limiter can also be implemented in the ECU...

I hadn't responded as I have always used the stock ignition system as well and was also told to stick with the tried and true Honda system until it shows to be a limitation. My Prod car will be stock, that was the plan with the 14.5:1, 190ish h.p. hand grenade engine that I have now stepped back from to the tamer Limited Prep engine. If it is reliable and not the weakest link in the chain, spend your effort and money finding that link instead of solving non-problems.

As for the rev limiter, I have not done a standing start race but I would think the limitiation in the launch would be tire and traction and not max revs so it seems to me you would be modulating the throttle and not simply at max revs. Since the IT legal cam runs out of power gain before the built in rev limiter, rarely did I find myslef hitting it during racing except in the few places that I needed to stretch being wound out a bit and not shift so I was extremely cognizent that I was up at the top and the stock limiter kept me from going to far in case I got there.

The two step lowers the rev limiter to your ideal launching rpm
and you can just sit at WOT, instead of modulating

I don't think Crane is legal for H4

actually, aftermarket ignition systems and coils are allowed, as long as they are not crank triggered and use the original distributor - in all HC classes.
