Default BAR Failure - stock JDM B18C

APEX CRX told me to post my numbers for suggestions, so I decided to just do a post on my faulure

Today I went to get smogged, and I bombed it.
The guy called it a really clean swap, but my emissions make me a gross polluter . Anyway, here're the numbers.

---------------------------------HC (PPM)---------CO (%)-----------NO(RPM)
test------rpm---%co2--%o2--MAX GP MEAS---MAX GP MEAS---MAX GP MEAS
15 mph-1949---14.3---0.5---89 277 189----0.53 2.03 0.70---708 1944 2916
25 mph-2380---14.6---0.2---54 227 105----0.51 2.01 0.38---746 1744 1586

Diagnosis: GP and FAILURE
I love how every FAIL is BOLDED and large font. They like reminding me of how much of a menace to society I am.

The guy was pretty definite that i was running rich. His idea was that my fuel injectors are leaking, my catalytic converter is bad (I agree, i think it's too old, 170K miles on this car but I dont know if the cat's been changed. The way the nuts were on there doesnt make it seem so.), my o2 sensor is screwed, my evaporative canister valve thing is malfunctioning, or my other sensors are screwed.

I disconnected the evap canister feed to the engine and it still smelled like the same crap (you can tell my car is a gross polluter just by sniffing it), so I doubt that that's the problem.

Before my test, I checked extensively all sensors, and they all seemed fine except for the O2 which is worrying me. The O2 Signal is supposed to oscillate, and mine does, within the right voltage values. However, it oscillates in 2 second intervals. I do believe my voltmeter is qucik enough to catch the osciallation. Any ideas? Is this 2 second peak-peak normal? I found in my book something called a "lazy oxygen sensor," which shows the same symptoms as what I have here. I'm going to replace my o2 sensor, it's going to be here on saturday, maybe that'll fix it. But in any case, read on

How do I check my injectors for leaks? will it be obvious?

Im ordering a new cat, that should be here soon.

Any help greatly appreciated.

cat and O2 are big players in passing smog. as for the injectors you can try running some of that injector cleaning stuff in the fuel. the only real way is to take them out and send them to like RC or someone who can test them but I bet the injectors are not your issue but I would just run some injector cleaner since those injectors may have been sitting on that jdm motor. make sure timing is on and also all the tune up parts are in good shape(plugs, cap, rotor, wires)

A cheap place to get your injectors tested and/or cleaned is cruzinperformance.com
I found out about this place here on H-T and I've had 2 sets of injectors tested and cleaned -- great service and much cheaper than RC.

Good luck with your next visit. for south bay crxs

Definitely get a new cat and o2. I got my new Carsound cat for ~$60 shipped on ebay along with a new universal 4-wire o2 for like $40.

Good luck with the BAR.

Hopefully there will be another b18c among us

Hang in there! You are close and just have a bunch of issues that need to be addressed. (and dang, you San Jose guys sure seem to hang tight)

It would seem to me that if an injector was leaking, you should be able to look at the spark plugs and figure out which one it is. That assumes that not all of them are having the same problem.

If you do need to send them off, I'd highly recommend RC. I had them do my injectors (and went by their shop).

You should also go to a normal smog station after changing the cat and O2 for a "pre-check". This where they do a partial check and do NOT hook up to the DMV system. THIS IS TOTALLY LEGAL!

Wes, its tuff to find a shop like that lately, they keep saying that they have to report it to the dmv. I did find a shop however and I got a check, but when Patrick went they said his engine looked "too big" and refused him...

wow those #'s are pretty bad especially the NOx #'s. It looks like you're running more on the lean end compared to the HC's for running rich. what was your timing at? The cat and a new 4 wire O2 sensor will do wonders. Try a "test" only shop that will do the pretest. Most of those places work with gross polluters and are more willing to charge for a pretest to try and do get the owner to have the work done there to correct the problem.

Ryan;

I'm kind of surprised to hear you say that it's hard to find a shop that will do a "pre-test". I know that it's totally legal and in light of the fact that the shops are licensed by the state, it would seem to me that they couldn't refuse you.
