Default Securing my hood

Since I've decided to go with a security system, I want to know about keeping my engine bay safe. I think that I have seen some stuff that can be done to the hood cable other than putting it in the engine compartment. Is there a modification, some spring based something (maybe I hallucinated a post about it about a year ago that I cant find) that makes it impossible to pop the hood from the inside if you don't know what you're doing? I want to keep my battery from being disconnected. I'm in Atlanta, and you never know what those crackheads will do next. By the way, I've heard about "hood pins" for two years now and still have no idea what they are. What are they??

Try a DEI 567T HOOD LOCK which is pictured below. It even has a built in starter kill mechanism. There are usually several auctions for them on eBay. I never used it so I can't comment on its effectiveness or ease of installation.
