speedometer not working(93 Ex civic)
Before ANYTHING: search on VSS (search is a wonderful thing here on HT)
I had the same trouble (my speedo kept jumping on and off) and spent 3 months troubleshooting until I finally got it...
1. Check the VSS connector (3-wire plastic plug). It sits on top of your tranny, right behind the bock. If the connection is loose OR the pickup wires not in good shape, you won't get a speed signal - Make sure that's in order
2. VSS itself: Possibly the sensor is bad - Try swapping in a different one and see if that fixes the problem
3. GROUNDS: Check ALL of the engine grounds, especially the big tranny ground that is found right around the passenger-side engine mount. Make sure they're tight. Also check the under-hood battery connections, and battery connections to the under-hood fuse box. Check the alternator connection, etc.
4. Fuses: Some people had success with this problem by checking and/or replacing fuses both under-hood and under-dash.
5. Cluster connection: Take off the dash trim and pull out your cluster, make sure the two main plugs going into your cluster are tight
6. Cluster GROUND: There's a wiring harness ground directly behind your cluster (black plug) - make sure that's connected well
7. SPEEDOMETER: Try swapping in a different cluster.
Turns out my problem was the Speedo itself. Only after the THIRD cluster I tried I realized the speedometer was the culprit. I installed a speedo that worked into my original cluster and haven't had any problems since...
Hope this helps - I wrote all thiis because I wish I saw a post like this 4 months ago
