Default How many folk have built their own headers?

I'm curious on making my own header cause I'm not in the mood to shell out 600 for a BISI header. I know it's not as simple saying "hey I'll go buy a bunch of mandrels and some flanges and a lil' chop tack weld and then viola!

But I'm just basically gonna make my own knockoff BISI header cause I'm cheaper and poor like that! Like what size and type of material to use?

I've made my turbo manifold and downpipe from scratch. I only have a wirefed mig w/o any gas so lets just say it wasn't the prettiest but served it's purpose!

I'm more likely gonna make it from just mild steel nothing fancy cause I don't have the money to make it completely from stainless.

If I made another header I'd probably just do mild steel and have it coated. The only downside is if it needs repair; if it's coated on both sides it'll be very hard to remove the coating for welding. Then afterwards it'll rust unless it's recoated.

I'm not saying this is you but sometimes people think things cost to much and they want to make a copy of whatever it is... But when you sit down and look at it and start trying to replicated it the cost doesn't seem too bad. +

But as for the header it looks to be 1.5" and probably 16ga. and you would need 8-10 U bends for that.

Yeah I can understand that for the cost of how many 180 mandrels I would need even to say make a 4-1 design header. I'd make a jig from wood with my old DC just so my header wouldn't end up all FUBAR looking to not coming close to lining up to the rest of my exhaust.

I'm not knocking that header or puting it down in any way.Just curious why would
want to copy that style of a header. For your first try maybe something with A little less bends and welds would be easier. All you will need to make one is:A flange=$20
6-8 13/4 J bends=90-$100
collector-weld on=$20 merge=100-$150
collector flange=$10
The look on his face A week later= Priceless

I'd use 16 ga. stainless 304 depending an engine type of racing etc. would determine primary sizing

If you're not familiar/comfortable with being able to make a QUALITY collector then either

a) Don't waste your time b/c it wont make great power

or

b) Buy a burnsstainless collector and make the rest of the header yourself. You'll learn some **** about header fab, and you'll have an excellent collector.
