Default RSX-S won't come out of 3rd gear

A guy I know has an I think 2003 RSX Type-S with about 9,000 miles on it, and he was driving it a couple of days ago and then had some trouble taking the car *out* (not putting into) third gear, but with a little bit of force it came out. Then the next day he was racing and did a quick shift from 2nd to 3rd and drove around in 3rd for a while and when he tried to take it out of 3rd he noticed it was stuck, so he stopped in a parking lot and looked around by the tranny and couldn't see anything wrong. He can drive in 3rd gear fine, just can't take it out, and the clutch seems fine. The shifter, when you shake it from side to side, moves kind of at a 45 degree angle instead of exactly side to side, and it seems as if the shifter was popped out of place and turned about 45 degrees or something like that. They had no jack to jack the car up so they couldn't look underneath. So anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I read that someone else on Honda-tech had this happen to them but it didn't say why or how to fix it. If anyone knows anything (or can do a better search that I can) please help out. Thanks.

I had an opposite experience twice. Two times my tranny wouldn't go into first. The second time was worse as I had to pull out in a second. After a while, I got it back into first with a little force. Tight as hell, drove it around and it was normal after that. I believe it was probably metal shavings in the tranny.

Wouldn't he be able to rebuild the tranny for cheaper than replacing the whole thing? And just curious, what exactly happened to the tranny to make it do that?

My friend had the same problem. 2003 Type S w/20k miles. He did a quick shift from 2-3rd and coasted to a stop light and tried to get it out of 3rd but it was stuck. I mean would not budge at all out of 3rd, we could have broken the shifter in half before it would come lose. Took it to Acura, Tranny is done, they blamed it on driver abuse. After arguing back and fourth for a day they covered it under warranty.

Does he have any mods? In particular a cold air intake. If so, it could be jamming. He should check the linkage and see if it's hitting in 1st, 3rd, and 5th. If not, then you might've bent a fork..hehe..

He has a short-ram, so no cold air... an kinda a noob question, what exactly could make a fork to bend? And about how much does a new one cost? The guy has warranty but I'm just curious... Thanks.

Yes, since he has warranty, he's taking it to get it fixed, but I'm still wondering what could make the fork bend cause I'm just curious.
