Default Greddy oil catch can question (yes... again... I promise this is a new question)

First off, I was gonna get it - I heard its not that great, but why? Its a freaking can! how can someone screw it up?

anyway, my NEW question is: has anyone ever designed a return line back to the oil pan? like drill a line in the bottom of it? or is this a bad idea.

also, I've seen cans with a filter on top instead of a return line back to the engine - I'm assuming this is to let the gasses out - is the purpose of the can to keep oil out of the intake, or keep the gasses out?

thanks guys

The purpose of the can is to remove oil from gases that are vented out of your engine. You can have the air return to the engine via the intake (SMOG legal) or put a breather filter on top of the catch can and have the gases vent into the engine bay (not SMOG legal).

screw smog and i understand what your saying by putting the hot oil back in the oil pan and not through the intake manifold. and i acually would think that would be smaog legal.

Putting the hot oil back into the oil pan wouldn't effect smog........

edit: but, why bother, you don't loose enough oil in the catch can anyway and I am sure that if there was logic behind this there would be a system already developed to do this. If you think about it putting a return line into the oil pan from the breather would cause an open hole (so to speak) and oil could actually escape out of that line you install to return oil.

alright, so, um, these gasses, do they rob any power or fuel economy? would I gain something from capping the port on the intake manifold and putting a filer on the can to let the gasses filter out?

Also, how does that work differently then the valve cover breather?

1. Never cap the manifold.....pressure equalizer....good thing.
There isn't much to gain from putting the filter on top of the can......basically you aren't going to be adding warm air from the head into your intake tract. But, I do not believe that it is enough to notice.

The valve cover breather would just cut out the catch can all together.
