went to the track for the first time last night....something weird happened..please help
alrite....im not a pro at driving or anything close
i taught myself how to drive stick 3 months ago and last night something went screwy
i was at the track and launched from about 5k. i popped the clutch out, maybe a little to fast because of the CRAZY *** wheel hop and spin...but once the traction grabbed...i shifted to 2nd...and the car just revved.....no transfer of power from the motor, then to 3rd...and the same...then about 3 seconds later i was off....any idea as to what happened? i ran the car 3 more times and eveyrhting was fine....im just very curious

Clutch might have slipped.
I'm just curious as to why you're launching at 5k. What kind of mods have you done?

Yeah 5k seems a little high if your not going to slip it at all.

Well, I don't know how he released it... I'm thinking he dumped the clutch right at 5k causing all that wheel hop and what not. But if your car is driving fine now. I wouldn't worry. What I would do though just in case (I mean better safe than sorry) is to change your tryanny fluid. You might find metal shavings in there and you wouldn't want that recirculating back in your tryanny now.

good call....totally slipped my mind.......so...still.....i need some suggestions
From my experience, with FWD, if you are on anything but slicks, let it slip just a little off the line. Completely dropping it has usually caused my motor to bog hardcore, and killer wheelhop.
Plus when you completely drop the clutch it will also kill your stock motor mounts. I would recommend that you put in motor mount inserts, they are cheap (only $40 bucks) and really work. They got rid of wheel hop for me, and I can practically drop the clutch without wheelhop now.

I think the clutch might have slipped too if the car was in gear and all it did was rev.
My first time at the strip I liked to pop the clutch too, but live and learn.

It sounds to me that the clutch slipped. As far as launching technique goes, there is a thread around here that explains in detail how to launch on different setups.
Read this, https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=635736, good thread on launching and such
I don't know what these guys are talking about. I used to launch pep boy $25 tires at 4500-5k and pull 2.1 60ft times. It's a better decision to get a good clutch(ONE THAT WON'T SLIP) and learn how to peddle the throttle(incase you have a mishap) and use that clutch well. I understand you are fairly new and you will get better. Launching takes practice. Every car is different. You just need to be persistent and consistent. But as stated before get some motor mount inserts. They may make it a little bit rougher but they help out a lot.
As for what happened. I'm sure it was your clutch slipping. Get a new one. One that is best suited for your needs.

Look... There's a difference between launching and knowing how to launch.
I pose'd the question why he was launching that way because he seemed like a new guy just trying to learn something and trying to start somewhere.
It is now obvious that he hasn't practiced any launching tricks that works for him and his car.
And who gives a **** if you can launch on dirty *** pep boy tires?
Continuing to be pro for launching at 5k will just induce him to keep doing the same resulting in catastrophic situations, as in destroying his clutch and tryanny.

well thanks everyone.....first out of my 10 or so topics i havent got flamed. i really appreciate all the help...going down to the track one more time beforee the season ends...then the cars going in the garage for the winter and ims aving up for a drag 4 kit will get a new clutch flywheel motormounts and lsd.....thanks everyone....honda-tech rules
Best advice I could give would be, give up that pointless drag racing ****.......and go road racing. A lot more satisfaction being on a track that actually has turns in it. J/k. If this is a daily driven car, and you're taking it to the strip and having problems like this. I'd say it's just going to be a matter of time before your clutch explodes, and you're without a car. Good luck to ya.

Just remember this...
some wheel spin is good, too much wheel spin is bad as it leads to tire hopping which is really bad.
poping the clutch at 5k is bad as it will obviously lead to too much wheel spin/tire hopping, unless you have slicks
if you have slicks and want to launch at 5k then watch out for you cv axels, and clutch and what-not.

IMO it would be best to just learn how to launch properly instead of just doing whatever doesn't spin his tires too hard or doesn't bog. I know too many people that got into the bad habit of launching poorly and now they have pretty quick cars and lose the race on the holeshot. I would imagine its easier to get into good habits to begin with than trying to correct bad habits.

from what ive gathered from this post and searching a bit....the purpose of a launch is to get a nice hard pull off the line...and wheel spin and hop would make that harder to do. i get a nice launch at about 4k now...doing what i have searched/learned and what i have gathered from this post.....so im going down to the track again next wednesday....going to see whats up th en
