f@#^ing timing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please someone help! I have a 98 head on a 1.5 d15 block, i cant get the timing!!! I dont even know when its top dead center. I know the #1 cylinder reaches TDC twice....does it matter on which stroke?! How can I tell, i line up that white mark on the pulley with index on the cover.
Also, when i put the marking on the crankshaft pulley in the up position, what are the valves at the #1 cylinder suppose to look like? because that UP marking is not working for me. The only reaction i get is a puff of air & gas come shooting out the TB! Is that a sign of combustion?
Please some one help!!! I'm 1 step away from setting the car on fire!!! (not kidding)

Quick reference - when placing the head from a 1.6L donor motor onto a 1.5L block, you need an adjustable cam gear to get timing perfect.

the funny thing is that, i had that car running perfect on saturday, yesterday i took off the t-belt to tighten it cause it was kinda slack and the socket and ratchet i had on the handle moved.
Hmm, cardinal rule of timing belts, which helped me in my head swap/lazy man motor build - white out on timing belt and cam gear before moving.

when i have the marking on the cam in the UP position, the #4 cylinder valves are half way open, im not sure if the intake or the exhaust though.
i know i need all the valves closed to and move the piston to TDC, how can i tell when the valves are closed? Please someone, im taking the bus to work and getting in late, i really dont wanna loose my job over this ****?
set the lines on the cam gear even with the head. \
___________ camgear is here ____________
use the horizontal lines. and put #1 to TDC

only rotate counterclockwise, never go the other direction. if you miss it, all the way around again.
1.belt off completely. slip coathanger into spark plug hole so it touches piston top. watch it go up and down.. make a mark with pen or tape so you can really see it moving.. find top dead center with rod and in conjunction with timing notch on pulley (the solo one, not cluster of three)
2.set cam gear east and west marks paralell to deck with up reading, you guessed it, up. (this is for d15. d16 sets southwest mark to plastic plate mark behind it and disregards east west marks) loosen tensioner bolt, remove spring from hanger, let dangle off tensioner.
3. dont move anything now. slip belt over 1. crank gear 2.tensioner 3 cam gear.
4. put tensioner spring back on post. rotate 1/4 turn counter clockwise to take up slack and tighten tensioner bolt. spring sets the tension. not you.

once belt is on, you can determine tdc on power stroke because air will puff out spark plug hole with both valves closed. rotating counterclockwise, its always the cycle after the #1 intakes open.. that upcoming tdc it the one. the cams determine this so without the belt on, no love.

hey whats up ultimx?
CH27- look at your gear. it will have the word up, a mark at 3oclock, a mark at 9 oclock and one at around 7:30 or so. the 7:30 is for d16. using it means the horizontal marks will be skewed about a tooth off from being parallel to the valve cover surface.
