Lots of grinding tranny posts this might help you guys out.
I had 2 trannys starting with my origional gsr tranny and then buying a used jdm itr 4.78 tranny with lsd. First tranny grinded very bad , the second tranny was ok but soon was grinding. I paid 1700 dollars for the second tranny so this was really bothering me. I have finally figured out the problem. The clutch slave cylinder was worn out. I realized my first problems after a clutch wore out and i replaced it with a clutchmasters stage 3. I had to move the clutch throw almost all the way out just to keep from grinding. It was slipping a little and got worn out. Then i changed trannys and put in a new act clutch. My new itr tranny worked fine for a few days and got the same problem. I tried changing fluid and i happened to notice a lot of black residue in the slave fluid in the master cyl reservour. I changed the fluid and bled it. Well it worked fine for a few weeks and i started going to the track and the grinds came back. I bleed it more often fixing the problem temporarily. Then i changed the slave and it has worked fine ever since. I put gm syncromesh in it once and it masked the problem for a while but eventually it came back and again i had to bleed the clutch. Now comes the clincher. It appears the gsr tranny is also in good shape. I let a friend have it for a transportation car ( he knew it had problems but it was driveable) It has never ground yet. I would assume that the aftermarket clutches put more stress on the slaves and a lot more people are getting grinds because of this or just plain adjustment issues. So before you start changing fluid, trannys or other parts, try bleeding the system. If it helps you had air in it . If it helps then comes back you need new hydraulic parts. This doesnt apply to cable trannys and i havent seen as many problems with the 2 3 gear grinds in the cables as the hydraulic trannys do. I got 90000 hard miles out of my factory clutch also with no problems. I would say it was time to change the slave with the abuse i gave it yet no one ever suggested the hydraulic system.
i have a cable tranny and its grinding in1-2,2-3,3-4 and proll 4-5 if i could shift fast enough. its got 208k mi. i need to find me another tranny.
if its all gears sounds like it was not properly adjusted and thats what caused the problem . ALso check your clutch. I had one that has a broke spring and it wouldnt disengage all the way and caused the syncros to grind.
