Default Question for any GS-R owners (2000-01 especially)

someone recommended i post on this board, so i'll give it a shot...

i have a 2000 GS-R and recently advanced my ignition timing... i was surprised to discover that at the stock position my spark advance was at 13BTDC... i was expecting 16BTDC...

after advancing the distributor as far as it would go, i was able to get to 16BTDC... not the 18BTDC i was hoping for...

so my question is this... anyone else here experience this same finding?

Did you jump the service connector before you adjusted it? Just checking because if you didnt, the ECU will alter the timing itself while you are adjusting it under the hood.

Was the car warm? And did you have the timing light hooked up to spark plug wire 1?

Nice article. Take it to the dealership and get an independent answer.

Are you sure you had the right spark plug wire?

<sarcasm>
it'd be a pretty amazing thing for a 4 cylinder engine to run with two cylinders firing within 3 degrees of each other...
</sarcasm>

yes, i'm sure...

if you turned the distributor all the way counter clockwise you have it more than 16deg. it would be more like 20-22deg. unless you have adjusting cam gears which will change the timing as well.

i have that exact same timing gun showen on the artical. i dont exactly follow their directions. i use the white mark only.

i set the gun to 0 (zero) and adjust the distributor until the WHITE mark hits that timing mark on the plasic cover. that IS 16 BTDC.

if you want to advance it 2deg you turn the **** on the gun to 2deg adjust the distributor again until the WHITE mark lines up with the mark on the plastic cover again. that IS 18deg BTDC.

and once you did all that you turn the **** up to 16 or 18deg on the gun and it should line up with the red mark on the timing cover.

hope this helps.......good luck!

i have stock cams w/stock cam gears @ stock positions...

setting the dial to 0, effectively make it a standard timing gun... the white mark between the green and red marks aligns with the pointer with my timing fully advanced... just as the upper white mark hits when i set the dial to 16... it is the same thing...

if i set the dial to 18, i cannot make the upper white mark reach the plastic pointer... the distributor has already been turn as far counter clockwise as is physically possible without making alterations to the slots the bolts are in...

the range i can get from twisting my distributor all the way in either direction is 5BTDC to 16BTDC...

anybody else with a late model gs-r check their timing? i am curious if changes have been made to the 2000-01 gs-r's... our vehicles have been modified for lower emissions, but i'm not sure what exactly has been changed other than the catalytic converter... i'm wondering if there is more going on here...

I have a '00 GS-R and didn't have any problems adjusting my timing. It's set at 16 degrees BTDC now, but there's plenty of room to move it up to 18.

here is a way i think will let you set you timing higher...
First try to retard the timing, without jumping the ecu...
Run the car for a while to allow the ecu to correct the timing. Now since the timing is at the factory level, and it cant be retarded, you can advance it past 16 to 18...
I dont know if this will work but its worth a try.
