Default What Causes Balance Shafts to Sieze up?

I recieved some help from somebody all ready, but I was wanting to know what other people thought. My balance shafts siezed up about two weeks ago. I was curious if anyone had any idea what would cause this. Its on a 94 H22. The teeth on the belt sheered off. The front balance shaft still kind of moves, but the rear one you need two hands to turn it. I have a good sized dent in my oil pan near the drivers side, I would say about a 1/2-1 inch deep, rough guestimation. Anyone with some ideas are welcome

Since they don't drive anything, the ONLY reason they would seize up is either lack of oil or debris in the oil.

Check out the dent in the oil pan and you will answer your own question.

Until you get the will to bash it out and get new balance shafts and drop your motor off at a machine shop. Oil starvation is a bitch, thats why I have a type r block being torn down now.

Wait now I am lost, because the balance shafts are no longer working oil pressure is low? That filter tube that hangs down right where the dent it, it suck oil via the oil pump correct? Because at idle the car wants to die and the oil light comes on, but as long as you arent at idle it is fine. I am going to remove the oil pan and either smash the dent out or put on the one I have from my spare motor in the garage. Thanks for the help you guys.

Your cause and effect is backwards. Because of your low oil pressure, the balance shafts seized up. Definitely fix the oil pan or replace it, or you'll have other stuff dying the same horrible death. Oil starvation sucks.

So to make sure we are on the same page here. The filter that hangs down approximately where this dent is, is causing the oil starvation. And that tube is where the oil gets sucked from. I really appreciate your help.

Yeah, the oil pickup hangs down to the bottom of the pan, and draws oil up through the screen and to the oil pump. If this is blocked, the pump no pumpy, as it can't get enough oil. The balance shafts (along with the rest of the motor) get no oil, and metal to metal contact occurs. Things heat up and expand, and then, well, you know the rest. In addition to the balance shafts, the bearings for the rest of the motor, the cams, and lots of cooling all rely on oil. It is the life of the engine, so to speak.
