yank the head off replace the head gasket, pull the pistons replace the rings and bearings and then get a new timing belt. If you have any more cash left over replace the water pump and oil pump. After that if funds permit replace valve seals and valve guides and get a valve job. You can do most of it yourself with a little reading of a haynes manual and ht of course. go to hondaautomotiveparts.com for good deals on parts.

trouble??? its not all that much work and it would be way more expensive to find another block that has also more than likely been abused. rings 100 bucks bearings 100 bucks, head gasket and timing belt 100 bucks... 300 dollars and you have a new bottom end. 150 for the water pump and oil pump then another 300 for a valve job and you are in good shape practically a new. so for 750 bucks you have an almost brand new motor that you dont have to worry about breaking down on you. but yeah whatever just go buy something that you know nothing about and slap it in there if you want... but i enjoy knowing I've done everything to my motor and knowing its been done right!

Actually, a B16A/S1 is not bad mountain car. With that short fifth gear, it climbs hills quite well with no need to downshift. In fact, I would take a B16A/S1 for the mountains over a B18A/A1 or B18B/YS1 (the LS dos not have enough torque to pull fifth gear well with the LS transmission - even in a Civic). In fact, a B16A/S1 is as good in the hills as a B20Z/YS1.

Like I said, the B16A/S1 is the better hill climber. It pulls fifth on hills that require a downshift with the B18A/A1.

i dont get it...all that rigamarole...to rebuild a tired B16 when you can get another long block for 500 bux.....you said abused....what about the condition of the crank? the bearings? what is you do all that, and then the tensile strenght of the crank...or the main bearings is down because of abuse.....just save the trouble and get a fresh JDM B16
to do a rebuild it would cost no more than 400-500 dollars. and it would be a good mountain car. i live in colorado and drive the rockies damn near every day and my tired *** b16 did it with no problems. some points are over 10,000 ft above sea leval. talk about a gutless b16.
