Default Problems with my car

well i haven't started it in about 2 to 3 months and before it backfired while it would idle, and when you would get to 2000 rpms and it would bog and die. Now it idles at 3000 to 3500 and backfires, also when you give it gas it will rev up and then die. Then when you turn off the the car and take the key out it still is turning off while the key is out. Any ideas on what is wrong. The only code i am throwing is vtec mechanical something or other, code 21. I have a new distributor on there so there is no problem with that part, the only thing is there is a little bit of oil in spark plug chamber. it is an h22 for those that don't know.

You have a timeing problem. Recheck distributor installation and re-set timing. If no improvement, have you ever changed the timing belt??

i can check the timing but last time i did it was aligned on the cams, and as for the distributor i thought there was only one way to put it on.

I don't know how your distributor was replaced, but it is possible for the distributor drive key to be inverted 180 deg. off during distributor assembly. I managed to do this while repairing my distributor due to a crank position sensor problem.

I don't remember whether my Accord would crank and run.

A timing light will allow you to check the base timing. Remember to short the service check connector to check the timing.

good luck

well a guy on another board said that on h22s you cannot put them on backwards or in 180 degrees because there is no way to put it on backwards unless i jam it in backwards, and i didn't do that, but i will check the timing to see if it is off.

You are correct, the drive key will only fit into the camshaft one way. However if the drive key is removed and rotated 180 on the distributor shaft and re-installed, you are out 180 on timing. It's definitely possible on a 94 Accord EX.

good luck

just to let everyone know, I found out the problem a while back, it was a fried wiring harness. There was a ground and a couple of wires mest up on it, but it is taken care of.
