Default I need help, if u know ur stuff, check this out. Overheating issue.. Thanks

Alright, I'm dealin with a 98 Civic Ex, 1.6 vTec, 5 spd. The problem is that when you come to a stop, it'll start heating up, but if u rev it up, the needle with drop. But if u stop, it'll take jus a min to get hot again. And if u leave it alone and let it rise, it'll rise all the way up to H, not jus high norm. Now check this out, I replaced the radiator, flushed the system, new fluid, plenty of oil, new thermestat. the pistons look fine, no antifreeze in there or anything. What do u guys think? What do i do next? any one have this prob before, and/or seen it?

Check to see if your radiator fan is working properly...Look by your thermostat housing and youll see the "thermo switch" that activates the radiator fan...Its a 2 pin connector.
You can unplug this and jump the plug to see if your fan is working properly...

If it works, you know that everything works properly after the thermo switch(bad thermo switch). If it doesnt work when you jump it, your wiring or the fan itself are bad. Then its time to bust out the test light...

If thats all good, you may need to just make sure you got all the air out of the system. After that,I would consider your water pump...If its old,the vanes get rusty and start to deteriorate. Then it wont move as much volume as it should...How old is the water pump by the way?

he got it all right there. id also check to make sure everything was plugged in after u changed the radiator. maybe u have a loose connection to the fans, or maybe ur thermostat might be bad, even brand news ones can be bad when u buy em. id start with the fan, and all electrical connections before u go rippin **** apart.

alright, my coolant, checked and air's drained. fan, its on whne it's overheating. like, it'll be on, and the temp will start risin, but the therm hose is passin fine, like it'll open, then pressure is relieved from the hose. How do i check a bad thermostat ground? any indications? and check this out, if they head gasket was shot to ****, wouldn't it jus over heat alot, if not all the time, not jus idling? it will only do this when i'm idling the car... crazy ****.. what do u think>?

you might want to check the thermo plug to make sure its working correctly and also check the coolant sender thats located under the dist..make sure those are giving you correct reading?

If everything else is working like you said, and you're not losing coolant period, into the oil or cylinders, then it's got to be the water pump. Water pumps usually **** a little coolant out the bottom when they start to go and make some weird noises.. That's all I can think of.

had the same prob. on my 94 teg ls. when it was kicked up at higher rpms it would be ok, but idling it would start to overheat. first, you might need to flush or change the heater core. if you or a previous owner put in some bars leak or something like that, its easy to **** it up cause there can be no antifreeze in the system, if there is it will just chunk up and sit , then, it will slowly break off and clog passages, at idle theres not near as much pressure to move the chunks. also, replaced the water pump. 1: its about the only thing left. 2:with everything youve replaced, this is something that should have been replaced as well. something to check, check the coolant line going in the cabin of the car and coming out. both should get warm, if the coming out is not warm then you have a plugged heater core. hope this helps man, and ive been through this exact same thing. good luck

Simple. Get yourself a multi-meter. Put the obvious: Black to the ground, Red to the power going into the thermo. The voltage should go up or down varying by heat rise and fall. Anyone have exact figures for this guy on the thermo sensor?

Typical problem to what your explaining. It doesnt hurt to to trace back the ground lead and clean its grounding either.

Good Luck.

if the fan is coming on then its not going to be a sensor though right?

ya, i bought the ca with an oversized cam. U know, the typical blue wheel chillin on the right side of the block. Its adjustable, but its on normal degree settings. And check this, i replaced the thermo, the coolant, and the radiator, along with checkin all the hoses yesterday, and today, it only warmed up a little bit like twice, and i drive all ****** day.. and it was 90's out here, so i had AC on too. oh, adn jus FYI, i have a short arm aem intake chillin inside the car, not down an out for cool air, (it was but we chopped it cuz of rain and ****, and the pipe was fucked on the end) what do u think?
