Default Strange "Pffft" sound - Fuel Pump?

for the past few months, ive been hearing a strange pfft sound, kind of like air slowly leaving a baloon (but not as loud) coming from behind me in my 89 crx si w/ JRSC. At first i thought it was an exhuast leak or that my muffler had shitted out. Since then, ive changed all my exhaust gaskets, got a whole new custom exhaust(including muffler and resonator), and a new catalytic converter (stock). but... still the sound remains. I have a 6 year old walbro 255 lph fuel pump in the car and was wondering if it could be this. The Fuel pressure seems fine during idle but Im really starting to think its the fuel pump. im stumped. has anyone heard of anything like this before?

p.s. fuel pump makes its normal noise when car is turned on and the pfft sound only happens during acceleration.

p.s. again.... just turned the car on to the first click and it made the noise without the car even starting.

its not "the" supercharger? does this mean u have one? lol

what I'd suggest doing is have someone sit in the back and listen to where the noise is coming from.. and the fuel pump is supposed to prime without even starting the car, so you dont have a problem there.

Which position did you turn the key to?

"I" is the accessory position, which turns on your radio and cigarette lighter. "II" is ON, which turns everything on. "III" is START, which engages the starter.

The fuel pump is supposed to turn on and prime the line when you turn the key to "II." It should whine for a few moments and then shut off, until you turn the key to "III" and engage the starter to crank the engine.

it was when i turned it to the II position. The noise goes for about as long as the fuel pump priming, but stops right before the fuel pump does. BTW, this only happens maybe 1 out of 10 times when i first turn the ignition to the second position, but ALWAYS when i get on it in the lower rpms with the car on.

and yes Hcivic88, when i say its not "the" supercharger, i am saying i have a supercharger (as i mentioned in the beggining smartass.)

Like i said before, it sounds like a very small exhaust leak and is high pitched like air slowly escaping a baloon but all exhaust, gaskets, etc have been replaced and the whole "sound popping up without starting the car" thing has got me baffled.

Ive had this fuel pump for 5 -6 years now and the supercharger for a good 50k miles. I know what sounds are supposed to be there and what aren't. Just looking for a little help from fellow honda people.

Could be the pump. Check for air leaks around the tank, The tank does hold some vacum...maybe it is leaking?

would i smell any gasoline if this was the case?

btw does anyone know what the metal cover is for behind the driver seat in the 89 crx? If you take out the interior you see the gold piping that leads the gasoline from the opening to the tank, but the end of the the piping has a silver metal cover. Ive tried taking it off, but its still stuck even after i remove all the bolts. Though i did get a heavenly whiff of gasoline which isnt there when the piece is bolted down. is this an opening to the tank and fuel pump? could the leak be in this location? thanks
