hey i have a 1989 honda civic hatchback dx and i am trying to remove the starter? and i took everything out and off.. the last bolt on the firewall side is a bitch to get outt.. i tried everyything if someone know how to get the damn bolt off or what to use please e-mail me at pimpincivic17s@Yahoo.com or im me on aim at pimpincivic17s thanks
are you sure you have the right bolts?? there 14mm and there right on the transmission, sounds like your trying to take the long 10mm bolts out....tighten them back up and look closer to the transmission.
thier is 2 14mm bolts the one closer to the front is off and the wires are all off and everything the last bolt that is toward the fire wall the 14/mm is a bitch to get too how and what do i use to get it off???
I used a 3 in. extention and a short shank 14mm socket. You can't really get much movement to loosen it but it'll come out sooner or later. You might try pulling the whole engine and transmission out, taking off the passenger side motor mount and then there is a clear shot of the bottom bolt.
That was a Joke.
That was a Joke.
Make sure you unhooked the battery!
I just did this recently when my car didn't start (duh..). When looking at the engine bay while standing infront of the car you will look on the back side of the engine (closest to the firewall) on the passenger side. You will have to move the air intake, just unscrew where the filter is then loosen the screw where the throttle body is, move that outta there. I hope you know atleast what it looks like and you aren't guessing what it is. Then there is this one hose in the way thats a bitch. If you took off the 10mm bolts, might as well leave them off. Like everyone else said, its two 14mm bolts. One is short (top one) and one is long (bottom one). The top one is easy to take off, but like someone mentioned, you need to get an extension for the bottom bolt. If you follow where the starter attaches to the engine around you can feel for the bottom 14 mm bolt, put a light there take a look at it, then put the socket on the bolt (it should be the only 14 mm bolt around there, goldish in color) then put the rachet (sp?) on and good luck taking off the bolt, it took me like 20 mins to get it off. There are only 2 electrical wires connecting to the starter. Take off the female spade connector (is that what its called?, the smaller wire, just pull that one out), and take off the other wire by removing the plastic protector over it and there should be another bolt to take off the thicker wire. Keep all bolts are you will be reusing them. Once you have done that, put the thicker wire onto the new starter and bolt it back on, then connect the female spade connector on. Line the new starter back where its suppose to go, put in the top bolt, but don't tighten all the way. Put in the bottom bolt, tight that somewhat. Then completely tighten the top bolt and once ur done with that completely tighten the bottom bolt, check ur wire connections one last time, hook up the battery and start the car.
Yes that bottom 14mm bolt is a bitch. That was the hardest part. Just gotta keep at it.

so can you actually get a ratchet on it and loosen it? i think i used a deep 14 and a 6" extension to go out past the starter and manuever. yeah, it helps to remove everything around it like the intake and such. maybe it was removed before and it is stripped which is making it hard to remove.

just a tip for that bolt on the firewall side... I attacked it with a 20in extension form the wheelwell and it came right out and in.
anybody ever have trouble with actually removing the starter when the bolts (2x14mm) are off, mine won't budge. put some pb blaster on it...
