Default Quick Brake Pad Install Question

In terms of the shims; do I need to buy new ones, or can I resuse the old ones? I am going from stock pads to Hawk HP+ pads. Also, where do I get the grease to put between the shims and the brake pads?

Thanks.

just reuse the shims.

as for grease, I use hi temp antiseize from Pep Boys. (hint: use very little, or else the chit will get squeezed out the sides and make a mess)

screw the shim - it'll tend to squeeze out after some drive time....several of us run the HP+ without the shim & there is no problem.

As for the grease - it goes between the arms of the caliper & the back of the pad (for the outside) and the caliper piston and the back of the pad (for the inside). This keeps a dry metal-metal contact from happening. $3 for a tube of synthetic brake grease to keep in your track goodie bad {a wet box for ammunition works great for taking all the oil/grease/anti-seize/etc to the track without worrying about leakage!}

Hope this helps.....Yoshi - get to sleep!

Just make sure NOT to put the grease on the pad surface, only the backing!

For the most part, I chuck the shims. They arent there for much except to help reduce noise. I simply put some grease (moly grease or mobil 1 synthetic grease) on the pad backing where the arms of the caliper hit and I am good to go.

After blistering (napalming) my set of shims... they look like crap anyway.

It's NOT antiseize. It's antisqueal compound, made specifically for this purpose. You can get it at any auto parts store.

Actually, although not designed for this purpose, anti-seize works fine in this scenario.
