Got the turbo apart. Was all easy going until I got to the reverse threaded nut on the shaft. It was crazy tight, and there was no good way to hold the nut on the hot side. But I got it eventually.

Looking for opinions, is it worth rebuilding this at all? For around $200 I could put in a new balanced shaft and rebuild kit. How much would this turbo be worth if it was rebuilt?

Is this shaft really a lost cause?

Just double checked and it is 5/8"

Is that shaft a lost cause...IMO, yes. Is it worth rebuilding(for the sake of resale)...maybe, you may get back out of it what you put in it at some point dollar wise. You did learn in the process so that is reward in itself. You can replace the CHRA, buy a Super core upgraded, or just replace the whole turbo. Those 3 options start at about $500 new in the box compared to $200 spent, that you may get $200-300 back out of at some point, and then be back at square one anyway.

Yeah I'm seriously considering whether I should even bother working on this turbo, or just not waste my time with it.

How much power did the car make? How much power do you ultimately want to make? What type of fuel is it on? Is it a street car/weekend car mostly?

400whp is as much as I'll go on the stock sleeves, and this is what it made previously. It's a street car on e85.

Have been looking at the STC Hunter, but I'm open to other options as well.

Is there any way to tell if this is the same compressor wheel that comes standard on the t3/t4?

I only ask because the PO said it had an upgraded compressor, and it looks like they may have ported inside the housing. I want to make sure if I get a new chra that this housing will still work.

Inducer roughly 2"
Exducer 2.75"ish

Had a number on the back
Does this look alright?

1) you need a caliper, my friend, a tape measure is horribly vague.

2) you didn't get an upgrade.. "T3/T04E" in the standard Garrett aftermarket cast wheel models are about 5 different wheels used.

3) that compressor cover is HORRIBLY scored. That can't be polished out, and if the inducer is larger than the original you had, you'll just ruin it without it being machined to fit. You cannot be even .02 millimeter off.

You are down to only having a good turbine housing left out of that turbo.

Just to close out this thread, I installed a new Garrett t3/t4 over the winter. There were some minor differences in hardware fitment but overall it bolted right up.

Drove it in boost today for the first time. Showing no signs of leakage so far, and spooling much better. Can actually hear it spool down after letting off the throttle, and the bov continue to bleed off the pressure. That never happened with the old damaged turbo
