Default 98 piston ring replacement

Any one have any info on replacing piston rings, on a 98 prelude. I heard that you can't just replace the piston rings with out having to take the engine out and send it to the machinist. Is it just possible to replace the rings with just new ones.

If ur mechanic is familiar with the hseries engine he should able to reccomend. But yes u can replace rings without removing the entire motor. Seen it done before. But why just replace rings? How many miles do u have, and are you haveing more then normal oil consumption?

If you think you need new rings, you at minimum need to have someone check the bores for roundness and taper. The specs are in the helms.

I'm consuming oil more than normal but when I take off I see some blue smoke, wich I'm assuming my rings are bad. Also the compression on pistons 12&3 is 180psi and #4 is 190psi. thanks for the replies.

Those compressions aren't very far apart now was the engine warm when you took these readings ?
You need to do a wet and dry compression test then compare the two.

If your compression jumps up allot then you have a ring issue if there is little or no change the problem is in the valves.

Although 180 to 190 psi is a good value so i would suspect a valve stem seal issue.

I did the test while cold. A wet test? you mean put some oil in the cylinder and test the compression. Never done that. thanks for the input

If you see smoke after idling for a little while and then take off, that's a sign that your valve seals are bad.

You still have to do dry and wet compression tests with the engine warm to find out.
