Default Wheel Offset

My buddy just 'came up' on some old school 14" BBS Wheels in 4x100...originally on a BMW. They are 30mm Offset, and kinda stick out. Is it possible to machine down the rear of the wheel to reduce the offset and get it closer to a 38mm+?

Thanks,

Suprdave

Edit: Mods, this was posted here...because the road race guys have the most experience with differing offsets.

Do you realise how small 8 mm is? Less than 1/2 an inch unless he has wheel fender clearance problems use them as they are or have him purchase the proper off set for his needs.

Yes its possible as long as there is enough material in the hub center of the wheel.

I have these same wheels (14x6.5") and have used them on a Teg and a CRX with 205-55-14 race rubber and dont find they stick out. Actually, they fill the fenders quite nicely. In fact, if my math is correct they do not stick out more than say a 7" wide wheel with 38 offset.

But i can imagine that they may look a little funny with a skinnier tire, a 185-60-14 or something...

can you show me a pic of yours? Actually it isn't that bad. Its just the tires aren't name brand tires and they bulge out quite a bit. I say I can get away with shaving 5mm but iono. Heres a bad pic I took yesterday

Before visiting a machine shop to do this for you-make sure that the back face is either flat or tapered slightly-takes instruments to measure it. If slightly tapered the shop must follow this in order for the wheel to properly seat on the hub. The amount you propose to remove is actually quite a lot and generally not recommended. There are some wheels that can tolerate up to 2mm if the center is well engineered.
