Default Just Got Neew 03 SI, Want to Auto-X

Just got a new SI and want to Auto-X in stock GS class I think. Anybody out there already doing so? Need info on tires, sizes for stock wheels and tire pressures. Is there anything else I need to know? Where can I get a set of stock wheels?

We're running a 2002 Civic Si, but we're in Street Touring vs G Stock. Still, we're running a 225/50R15 tire (BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD). (The car felt way under-tired on the 205/50R15.) Pressures have been around 40 psi front and 44 psi rear. You can see the car here: http://www.grassrootsmotorspor....html It's not stock-class legal, but more negative camber up front (think camber plates) is your friend.

I auto-x mine a couple times a month.

Im using Falken Azenis 205/50/15 in STS class (with Konig Heliums, and a CTR rear sway bar)

Its a fun car to auto-x, though the stock tires are not so hot.

Do a search in the archives in the EP3/RSX forum under my username. I did a big writeup about my EP3 setup in STS.

And it's quick too.

Well, for STS.

Thanks for all the info. I guess no one is running in stock class. Less competition for me. Will the 205-50-15 and 225-50-15 tires fit on the stock rim?

David, the tire pressures seem strange to me, low in the front and high in the back. I used to run a GLH turbo in '85- 90 and the front had the high pressure with the back low. This allowed the back to break loose a little on turns. Would this be different on the SI?

I will run into sometime as I am in Florida also.

You will probably have better luck in STS since there aren't any good tires available for your stock size and you can't change tire sizes and stay in stock class.

You can use any DOT approved tire. Size is not restricted, other than diameter.

Stay in G-stock for now.

I'm going to go against the grain and suggest you burn up your stock tires first. If this is your first time autocrossing, you'll gain more by learning to drive the car the way it is now. Find and experiment with the limit of these tires FIRST!

Scenario: If you go and buy some R-compound and spin regularly, then all you're doing is waisting your money and ruining your expensive tires by flat spotting them.

Also R-compound tires lose traction with generally a lot less notice. So, again your normal street tires will help you to learn the basics of driving. Again if you're starting out, then your first year or two, don't worry about competing as much as learning and above all else having fun.

Ride with instructors, and have them ride with you. It's a great way to learn, and it free!

2 cents.

I'm currently racing G Stock at my local SCCA autocross events. The only thing that I have changed is adding 205-50-15 Azenis on an extra set of stock rims that I bought off a fellow H-T member. I use my other stockers with the OEM tires for commuting and daily driving and change them on race day. Best tire pressure I've found so far for me is about 35 psi front and around 37 rear.

If you want to find an extra set of OEM wheels to stay in G Stock, check the classified section on ephatch.com. You'll find a lot of good deals on wheels there.

I'm racing in GS in Los Angeles as well. I decided to stay in GS and just shred my stock tires while I learn how to drive this year. As much as I hate to admit it and as bad as the stock tires are, right now I *the driver* am the weakest link. I've had a very experienced driver in my car and I was shocked as to how much faster he got the car around the course WITH the suckass stock tires.

BTW, the car is really really fun to autocross!!!

Sorry about my bad info. These are the correct rules regarding tire/wheel sizes:

1. Any wheel of diameter and width identical to a stock or factory optional wheel, offset within +- 0.25 inch
2. Most street legal tires that will fit the mounted wheels and stock bodywork

The way I interpret this is that tire diameter and width aren't limited as long as they fit on wheels identical to stock dimensions. I got this info from here http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/ .

This is a different David... but what I found out that any pressure, that is much higher or lower, can induce oversteer in the rear. It just breaks loose differently. I used to run higher pressures in the rear and when the rear broke loose it was quickly like on ice, but still controllable. When I started running lower pressures in the rear, when the rear broke loose, it seemed more progressive. I am not sure if this makes sense?

Huh. I did this test on my stock Sentra and came to the exact opposite conclusion about breakaway characteristics. Funny how different cars react differently.

As one of the resident Florida autocrossers, and living only 30 mins away in Gainesville, just wanted to make sure you had the 2 following websites...

http://www.cfrsolo2.com
http://www.buccaneersolo.org

I'm also an instructor at most of the central florida events, so if you have any questions once at the event, just find me.

Black MR2, #129 E-stock

good luck, and yes, keep the car stock and learn to drive it first.

We found the higher rear pressures helped the rear end rotate, although different springs/rear bar/whatever could produce something different. Honestly, going from the 205s to the 225s seemed to make the biggest improvement. And another source for Central Florida events is http://www.martinsportscarclub.com

Don't forget to have fun.

Thank all of you for your advice. Just bought wheels and tires. They should be delivered this week. Looking forward to my first auto-x.
