i can promise you that at no time was anyone--other thatn don barrick--on tarack at speed without a helmet.....guys, you have to remember that this was a joint event, and sometimes there are rules allowed that wouldn't necessarilly be allowed...administratively, we did not have ultimate CONTROL</TD></TR></TABLE>
I hate to correct you on this one JJ, especially since I'm an official, but there were several other BSR instructors that went out during the Shotguns without a helmet on. Once they noticed Don wasn't wearing one a couple others followed suit. Not playing devils advocate here, just correcting you since people love to take us with direct quotes so they can ping us on mistakes.
If by some chance someone did make it out of grid without a helmet on, which personally I don't think they did, you saw us do a double take because we did notice it and were on the radio 2 seconds later. During that first pace lap as John said the corner workers are looking at these cars for any possible thing we might have missed, and you can be sure that they were calling in people without a helmet on if it happened. I'm not going to sit here and say that I know with 100% certainty that everyone had a helmet on, because there's no way I can check 100% of the people, but I know and trust my fellow gridworkers to do thier job. We're human though, and prone to make mistakes, I'll admit it's a possibility, however I don't think it probable.
In addition, any instructor that goes out on track with a student not wearing their helmet shouldn't be allowed to instruct. Grid's responsible for certain things, making sure the right drivers are there, making sure the cars have the proper tech credentials (unless we're told otherwise), making sure the instructors are actually instructors, making sure windows are down, sunroofs are closed, and long sleeves and pants are being worn(unless we're told otherwise). Once they get in that car with the instructor the instructor is in charge of that student. If for any reason they feel unsafe, or fear for that student's safety they should pull themselves off the track.

any instructor that goes out without knowing he has NO ROLLOVER protection in an open top car shouldnt be allowed to instruct.
oh and since when did we teach a race line thru the carousel anyway?

Dragon... Thanks for being honest.
...and not just jumping on the defensive Bandwagon. Behind every fumble is a lesson to be learned, and a chance to improve upon procedures. I agree with everything you said... Nice to know you're one of the guys in charge(on grid), because that let's me know that at least somebody is open-minded and honest enough to make things better for next time.

Actually, you started some of the best discussion I've seen on this forum in a while. You last comments brought out an important point though -
The brochures (which i have to admit I didn't see until late Sunday, and didn't read) need to say more about what each event is and what to expect to see. THis way, for people who never make it into the pits and can't here the annoucements, a person can try to piece together what they see with a definition.
Watching a regular race weekend can be confusing enough. A HYPERFEST is just that much more so. IT is not NASCAR racing at all.
It is also good to know that people love NASA enough to come to it's defense. ALthough the NASA name is imbedded behind the HYPERFESTS, sometimes NASA is not always in total control.
Not saying this is a good or bad thing. It just is. There are only a few people privy to all the happenings behind the scene. Certainly I am not one of them. The bottom line however, is if you have a major concern ----- about anything, sometimes it is better to address those to the people in charge rather than the population in general first.
I understand that these were your impressions and again, I am glad you said something. Maybe the people in charge will hear what was said and wokr to make sure that the right impressions are there for future events.

There seems to be more than one efficient way through 6A and 7 for our FF cars.

ALL instructors should teach the party line to students , the race line is for racing.
I'm just worried they were teaching novice students to lift and point , something that should be reserved for higher levels ONLY.

giving someone the false sense that they are "racing" by driving a racing line is not good
especially since the racing line is just in front of the other guy or trying to get in front of the other guy, not a set line through the corner
