Really, the collar will only help to hold your helmet up while you're cornering, it won't do anything in a crash. Get a real H&N restraint, if your budget (and cage, seat, harness) allows.

Assuming that people are wearing it the right way, doesn't it help keep your helmeted, heavy head from snapping forward in an impact and collapsing your trachea or separating the cord at CV-1 ?
I do not think you are going to have a lot of luck talking HPDE people into a head restraint system.

In a light to moderate impact, I can see a collar helping ease some loads on the suboccipital region. I forget where it was that I read mention about a collar possibly possible amplifying the damage by providing an unnatural pivot point in a heavy impact.
Something like a Leatt device would probably be a lot more helpful, albeit at a higher price point... which is not all that major compared to the rest of the associated track expenses, particularly in an incident significant enough to cause the type of damage a Leatt might prevent.

YEah that was me, I had a broken CV joint. I just want to thank everyone that helped. From the guy with the Ultima who towed my car to the race paddock, to Kevin Helms and Cory who sold and installed the new axle. It was a weird feeling I was still a little "high" from driving so when it happened it really didn't hit me how potentially bad the situation could be. Two hours from home and no ride back would have been a pain so thanks once again for all the help and everyone pointing me in the right direction

Yeah I spoke with the place I got everything yesterday about the collar and they told me its only real purpose is to support the helmet.....ex: turns. BTW, not to plug, but if anyone is ever looking for good folks to deal with OG Racing (local to me) is great.........got my seats, bar etc there.
They had different HANS devices but explained its only good for frontal impact. Doesn't seem like much that can be done for a side impact like mine. A different seat would help I suppose but I just bought the EVO II's.
I actually had to get Xray's this morning but all is good......muscle issue vs spinal. Whiplash sucks, took me 20min just to get out of my bed and the impact didn't even seem that severe at all. They gave me some good meds so I'm good
Guess I'll see some of ya'll at VIR next or wherever.

That isn't completly true.

That hit TOTALED that race car, and the driver was wearing a hans and was completly fine afterwards not even a sore neck.

Though the center net did help out when the driver's head hit it. Every time I see that hit, ouch.

I drove Sander Marques's car this weekend with the RaceTech seat with the head restraints, and I must say that was quite nice. I feel bad that just a month ago, I recommended the standard seats to tthomas for his car. I am going to switch to the head restraint seats once I can swallow spending $1100 + brackets on ANOTHER racing seat for my car.
Has anyone ever tried the Sparco Pro ADV? It is cheaper, would use my current brackets, and I have had awesome fitment in all of my other Sparco stuff. The HANS is next on the list after that seat too...

Any problem with peripheral vision? How tall are you?
I sat in Smitdog's car w/that seat because he's trying to talk me into getting one, and that's the first thing I thought about.

This is not intended to start another H&N debate, but the ISAAC units do a very good job at protecting side impacts which is what eventually sold me on buying one. (The unit does not carry a SFI certification therefore cannot be used in NASA competition racing.)
If you don't have racing belts, another good alternative is the G-Force unit which attaches to the helmet. It's inexpensive and not as effective as the ISAAC or HANS, but it sure is better than nothing.

George, I am not sure how u felt about the RaceTech seat but, I think it is the the best seat avail for me. It is well worth the money.

Get a H&N device first, then a side net, finally the seat. The side net provides great protection for the money.

I've never heard of that. I read in SportsCar magazine where Dr. Melvin said neck braces can do more harm than good. Also, I don't think even the collar manufacturers make any safety claims besides helping to reduce your neck from tiring.

I'm 6'1". Peripheral view was fine on track, I forgot that I had it actually. I am group 2, and was doing much more passing than being passed, so not quite what group 4 or a racer might be going through however. I drove the car around a little on the street, and if you need to look all the way to one side, yes, you do have to lean forward a bit.

I'll look into the H&N, any suggestions on which one? The ISAAC looks all complicated, but wins in all those tests....

Someone reminded me that I got that comment about neck snapping forward from a woman named Miriam, who instructs at NASA events when Dan is not around. I don't know if that improves the validity of the comment or detracts from it, but there it is. :-)
*IF* you believe this, it probably explains why some people wear the collars with the thick part in the front.

Nope, not at all. I have the intermediate model and it's quite easy to install and utilize.
