Default ----- Project EJ2 ------

Just wanted to show the project I've been working on the past few months. This is only the second full car I've attempted to paint. The first car was my black EJ2. I definitely learned a lot of lessons on my car and I'm applying my new found knowledge to this project. The biggest thing I learned was to use a board sander instead of a DA sander for the body work! hah.

I will update this first post with more info later on, but for now I just wanna share these pics. (Hopefully my photobucket doesn't crash. If it does, I think I will just sign up for a new account )

All stock milano red EJ2 going for a full interior/exterior white color change.

Pretty bad passenger side quarter panel damage. Didn't plan on doing any cutting.

I got a hold of a stud welder from my friend and started to pull out the damage.

Pushed it out from the inside as well...lookin a lil better

My garage lookin like hell...

After some Bondo...there's still low spots. I'm still working on this area as it's the hardest part on the car because of the body lines. I just kind of left it at this for now and giving myself a break by doing other parts of the car.

Very light hail damage on the roof. A lot of it I was able to wet sand out. Some bigger parts I used a little filler.

Pretty smooth for now. Waiting to finish up some other parts so I can throw on some hi-build primer/sealer.

Two small dings on the trunk lid. A little filler and its good. I'll update with newer pics later.

Started to strip the guts as its gonna get resprayed inside as well.

Hey look at all this new storage space!

Lets put it to use!

Okay back to work...

This driver's door is pretty bad (see below) and I decided it would be easier to work on it if it was laying flar on the floor.

To my suprise...it's already been repaired before! You can see the filler on the far left and far right side of the door...This door should probably be replaced because the right side of it has been bent in (like if you opened your door into a concrete wall and bent the end) but we're gonna try to reuse it.

Yes, it's Bondo. I know someone will say something about it. I didn't know any better when I started this build. I think it will hold up though.

Getting it flat slowly...just remember...FLAT BOARD SANDER! lol! I've learned my lesson. No waves in the paint on this car hopefully.

I tryed to get my friend to go for brand new fenders, but he found a very good guy that will try to save those as well (and for a lot cheaper!) I was having enough trouble with the rear quarter! hah. We're not worrying about the hood as it's gonna get replaced. We might just scuff it and paint it so it matches the car as it awaits a carbon fiber hood. Bay will get repainted when the booooost goes in.

That's it for now. I will get updates up as the car progresses. Next few things on the list to do are:

- driver door bondo!
- pass. side low spots and body lines!
- small spot on the driver quarter
- hi-build primer

Dinko does ballin work, his Civic is beautiful. He learned some do's and don'ts on the body work on his Civic so that car should come out sweet.

goog luck man. That car has a lot of work to go. Regular Bondo brand sucks, look for a lightweight filler like RAGE GOLD or something. Every low spot where metal meets filler or old base is going to show right through unless you get it really really flat and prime it correctly, then resand.

Everybody is saying it sucks, but I wanna know WHY?! I've never used Rage brand so I wouldn't know the difference. I've been mixing the bondo with a little more hardner than recommended. It seems like this way it takes longer to sand it down. I kind of like it that way because I'm not fast to take too much off and then having to reapply the area with bondo.

I will be using Hi-Build Primer/Sealer from Keystone Automotive ( http://www.keystone-auto.com ) I'm anxious to see the difference between the hi-build and the regular primer I've used in the past. Anybody have any experience with hi-build primer? I've seen Hybrid-Koop use it on his project, but I dunno how good of a job he did underneath... Would I be able to hide something like this with hi-build primer or would I need to apply some kind of filler (not bondo, maybe i'd try the Rage stuff...someone recommend something please!! ) to this?

Filler primer or Hi-Bulid primer is used more to cover up grit marks and little pittin and ****, you can't really fill low spots like what your asking about.

I forget the brand i used but I love light weight fillers, but you have to try to stick only using it on the final coat, dont try to fill huge spots with it. And also it sands very easy so i't easy to take off to much, usa a light grit paper and guide coat. I don't know if you know what guide coat is or if you have used it, so i'm not trying to make you feel stupid. It's basically black spray paint that you spray over the spot your sanding, make it a light coat so it drys fast, and even try to get fast dry paint and dont get glossy paints. After it's dry start sanding with a block and if will start to show your high and low spots.

Get Er Done!

Actually I think that primer might fill those two little "dings" on the right...but i dunno about the one on the top left. I need to keep sanding it a little more to see if it's as shallow as those dings. I have spot putty that works for dings and stuff but i don't think those are deep enough for that even. That's why I wanted the high build primer. If it fills in scratches, I don't see why it can't fill in a little ding (at least make it less noticable...and i think the white paint will help hide it a little more) and No you don't need to teach me about guide coats lol wow.

btw...Chas PM me again about that crank I picked up from you when you moved. You said it spun a bearing or something? I couldn't really find any marks on it...

You can try the primer, but I don't think it's gonna work. I would go to the Hy-Vee and get some dry ice, if you hold it over those doen't it can pull them out. I have never done it but I have had lots of people tell me it works. I would make a post on here about it and ask if anyone knows more about how to do it. It's supposed to work like magic on those kind of dents. I also like using wall paper rollers from the back side to smooth them out. It's worth a shot. If you don't want to go that route I would pick up some of that fine light weight priner for it. I really like using thats tuff, but it's kinda pricy.

Here's something I found on using dry ice on here.
Dry Ice will condense metal and thereby shrink small dents on your car. Place the Dry Ice on the inside of the dent if possible. Use heavy gloves and press flat sheet against dent. If it is not possible to get on the inside concave part of the dent, then using heavy gloves hold the Dry Ice so a corner can fit into the bottom lowest part of the cratered dent. Hold the Dry Ice until the metal is frosted at least 2 inches beyond the dent. Let the metal warm up (in the sun is the best) and repeat the procedure. Sometimes the dent will pop out perfectly. More often it will not be possible to get a flat smooth finish, but the dent will be reduced noticeably. Creased metal will still show the crease line but the dent will be far less pronounced. I have not seen any paint damage, but I'm sure if the paint is not strongly adhered, it could peel away.

And with that door, I would get the whole thing down the bare metal and start fom scratch, I know its gonna be alot of work, but starting from scratch is really the best way. I would coat the whole door with lthin coats of filler and start sanding

I'd like a lil more input from other members on this. Preferably by some people that do it profesionally. I've seen a few of you guys with SATA guns so I know you don't just do it as a hobby

Nice job on the body work. I was just wondering if youd be interested in a trade for interiors. I have the brown and would love the black/gray. Get back to me. Later.

Hey Dinko, why do you want brown interior?

And Phil DeVtec, it's really not that hard, anyone can do it, it just takes time and patience (not to dog Dinko, but it is something anyone can learn). The best way to learn is to go and buy a shitty fender at a junk yard and start putting dents in it with a hammer and then fix them. If I can learn then anyone can learn.
