Default Paint costs!

Wow, paint has gone up.

About six years ago, I bought a gallon of paint and clear with associated reducers/hardeners and it ran me a total of about $250. Now, six years later, it's about $500-$600. Although the former was Sherwin Williams paint vs PPG.

How much is PPG or Sherwin Williams automotive paint costing you guys?
Thanks,
Gary

It depends on colour...reds are the most expensive followed by blues and pearl add a whole lot to the cost. THe cost of clears has damn near doubled in the last 10 years, as well as the reducer and hardener cost...

I shot a car with PT cruiser orange ( it was a 93 4 door civic ) about 2 years ago and it cost me 700 for 1.25 gallons of paint, 1 gallon of clear and the ancilleries...It was all PPG DBC, with CONCEPT clear.

Well, I just bought a gallon of DBU black. With the clear coat, activators, and all the reducers, it was almost $700!! Geez! Painting your own car has doubled since I painted my last car....

So here is the breakdown if anyone is interested:

* $250.10 - 1 gallon of night hawk black PPG DBU paint
* $199.40 - 1 gallon LOW VOC Speed Clear (PPG DCU2042)
* $ 86.65 - DCX-61 high solids hardener
* $ 48.55 - DDR-1170 reactive reducer
* $ 17.05 - DT-870 Urethane reducer
* $ 31.83 - respirator
* $ 53.87 - CA TAX

How are these prices compared to where you guys live?

This is a petrolium based product. It will go up as long as oil goes up.

Waterbourne paints are more appealing every day.

Yup. Already being used in parts of California and I am pretty sure that we in NJ will be following suit in a couple of years. The stupid thing is that it is still a urethane clear coat. Atleast with Dupont it is. Had the Dupont rep at the shop telling me about it. So alot of it will still be petrolium based until they get a GOOD water based clear.

Also depends where you buy it, and how you approach a vendor. I've seen a clear I like to use online for 130.00, was at a random paint store and they wanted more than 200.00 with not much of a discount for the same clear. Some places have a crazy high standard mark up.
