it depends. Does your car have bare metal spots? Whats the reason you need to primer.

if your car has bare metal spots... those have to be hit with etching primer. the E. Primer has a chemical reaction that makes tiny tiny holes so the primer can stick.

Epoxy primer is always the best. Its a 2K primer which is two parts. One part Primer One part activator. Epoxy is good because it also plays the role of a sealer.

but its important to know why you have to primer. Because once the epoxy is dried, its very very hard to sand. it clogs up the paper real fast.

so clean off any rust, cover the bare metal spots with etching primer.

then epoxy primer. All primers break down to the elements, some just take longer then others, but they all break down.

trust me, don't primer just to primer... its a bitch once you want to paint your car. all of that weather beaten primer has to come off. and new primer goes on.

just primer the spots you have too. OH YEA! do not primer bumpers... bumpers are a PITA to sand.

it depends on the paints condition. if it still on there pretty good, you just need to scuff of the clear and spray your primer sealer and you can lay your base on top of that.

who is doing the painting? if the shop is doing it, just let them primer it too. let them use parts that are compatible.

ill just drive around with a diferent color car until im REALLY ready to paint. i made the mistake of trying make it one color, and now im in the process of removing all the weather beaten primer. BIG ******* WASTE OF TIME!

the only spots i would primer is the bare metal spots. anything else ill just wait until im really ready.

don't even primer it. unless its rusting in some parts, you have to fix that. but primering the whole car and painting it 4 months later will add a lot of work. to me, its a waste of time.

i heard that epoxy primer can be shot directly over bare metal without etching primer. also if you do have to go bare metal, then etching primer, then epoxy primer. do you need to sand down the etching primer? also if i would be sporting the all black epoxy primer look for a few months, would it be okay? because i want to do body work over time, since i work full time and have limited time to work on my car. so i think by using epoxy primer on my car would seal out h2o and all the other elements..

what tip would you say to spray epoxy primer with?

this is the stuff i'm going to buy. they are a ppg dealer, and it's the same if not better.

High build, epoxy, etch can all be applied to bare metal. However some methods are better, more ideal than others and the product should be used as recommended. Epoxy will seal out moisture the best, but its still going work the best w/ a top coat. Just one coat of single stage paint will help. Most likely you will be fine with just using a quality epoxy but who knows what it will go through in what amount of time. I recommend just doing one panel at a time and cover your work with single stage.
