I really just want to know what size sanding blocks (or assortment of blocks) people are using. I'm not going to do this for a living, so I figured a set of durablocks would suffice for a project. Just need advice on what kit or if not a kit, what blocks? (Mainly working on quarters for 95 hatch.)

Also, what grit papers and WHERE are you getting them? Suggestions on type, brand, style, etc... would be GREATLY appreciated.


Lastly...shrinking disc. I've seen a few for about $60/$80. Anyone have any other sources that sell them for less?

3m gold ONLY for my sanding paper. Other stuff ends up costing more in the long run. You can get it by the roll with PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) for your blocks much cheaper than buying those "bulk" packs at NAPA. Personally, I find myself using my long 12" hardblock (wood) quite often, I have a 5" softblock that works pretty well for nooks and crannies.

A DA sander can cut your time considerable if you are competent with it. Going with better filler products (I like rage gold and dolphin glaze) makes things alot easier.

3m fineline and automotive masking tapes are a must. Masking paper that will stand up to urethane paints can be purchased (along with most of these supplies) at your local NAPA autoparts. Do NOT use newspapers to mask. I've seen so many of them bleed through onto windows/trim and urethane paint doesn't just slide off.

Generally a clear sanding will take 800 on a DA, then smooth out with a green block or 1000P on a 3M pad. It all depends on what surface your working with.
