Default retrofit/ballasts question

i'm about to buy a used retrofit off of a member on another forum and the projector doesn't come with ballasts. the projectors are from an E55. i was wondering, do you need to use specific ballasts with those projectors? do i need OEM ones or can i just get one off a hid kit?

any ballast with a d2s plug should work... i'd try and get a decent ballast, so you don't have problems with the ballast burning out in a year.

Yep, any D2 plug will work fine. Philips/Hella Gen3 (aka LVQ-212) with built-in ignitors, or Hella Gen 4's w/ separate ignitors would be my choice. I hear Matsushita makes good stuff as they are usually OEM equipment on most Japanese cars with HID.

My Philips LVQ-212 ballasts have been going strong for over 5 years now.
