I wetsand starting with 1200 grit (maybe 1000 or 800 if the lights are really bad) and work my way up to 2000 grit. I start going back and forth, then when I go to the next higher grade, I sand up and down. I keep switching with each higher grade so that I can see if there are any scratches left from the previous grit.
After the 2000, the lenses look evenly hazy, but with no yellowish fading. I polish and buff with my Porter Cable random orbital using a yellow foam cutting pad and Meguiar's DACP, then wax by hand.
Before and after looks like this:

Hey I used 800 grit sandpaper first then did like three good treatments of turtle wax rubbing compound and wetsanded with 1500 and one more rubbing compound treatment and wetsanded real good with 2000 grit and hand waxed/buffed like everyone else. it worked real good.

If you use successive grades of sand paper, like 800 -> 1000 -> 1200 -> 1500 -> 2000 then there is no need for rubbing compound in between sanding.
