All HID kits are illegal in the US.

If you want to be legal, use the correct bulb for your car.

?.... HID kits do come as an oem application on vehicles today (2008). as far as the temperature level of the HID may be a different story.

I really don't understand why this is so difficult for people.

Some cars some from the factory with HID lighting, yes. Obviously, thats legal.

HID kits are illegal. Period.

Even HID retrofits are illegal. They are, however, significantly safer for others on the road than a kit, and as such, are less frowned upon by the modding community.

Either way, if your car did not come from the factory with HIDs, its illegal to put HIDs on it.

i'm not so sure... i've never heard of new legislation to explicitly prohibit the use of retrofitted/aftermarket HID lighting on a platform that wasn't HID from OEM.

also, many of these vehicular regulations vary state to state. i know there are many regulations with respect to the color, height of the light on the car, angle of cutoff drop, etc... but i haven't heard anything specifically forbidding the use of HIDs on vehicles that didn't come with them.

i can probably see a cop pulling you over with a pnp kit that is glaring light like a ****, but retrofits should look just like oem HIDs (because they are).

maybe california has some law against it, but i haven't heard anything in PA. if there is some FEDERAL (nation-wide) law against it. please let us know! (and try and be specific with what the actual law dictates!!!)

Kits and retrofits are all illegal. If your car didn't come with it, it's illegal and that's pretty much everywhere. The only way around this (that I know of) is buying the TYC projectors that come with the HID lighting built in. They come with a DOT approved paper to keep in your car as proof for a cop.

you guys must be from california, where cops are picky a-holes... but you still didn't specify what LAW this breaks. DOT approved doesn't mean much because all the aftermarket headlight housings i've ever used have a DOT approval. and if you retrofit with OEM parts, they also have DOT approval.

DOT section 108 is the lighting laws. If your car didnt come with HIDS, and you install them into a stock or aftermarket light that wasnt designed for HIDs, its illegal. Exceptions would be TYC D1S headlights which are DOT certified under section 108. I would go so far as to say if your car has HIDs in Europe or Japan, and you install them in your US car, thats illegal even though its a factory headlight.
