Default tensioner piston sucks it's self in when valves close. skips 4-6 teeth!

k20a2
I just put some supertech springs and retainers in. Everything went back fine. But now that i've got everything lined up(cam marks) block set to TDC chain on as soon as I turn it 90* and the valves are ready to shut the tensioner piston sucks it's self in. And the chain goes limp to the point where it's skipping 4-6 teeth at a time!. I took everything off properly and things were fine 2 days ago now this. I have absolutely no idea what's going on, I've done "B" timing belts so many times but never the chain. This engine is 1 i'm building on a stand so it's easy to access everything.

Why is the piston being "sucked in" every time the valves are ready to shut(as they should) the chain goes so limp the pressure from the spring trying to close the valves just rockets the gears forward by 5 or more teeth. if I take the chai off and just spin the block or cams on their own the piston just stays out.

Is this a brand new tensioner or the original one ??? Are you turning the crankshaft clockwise or counterclockwise ???

No it's the old one with maybe 110-120,xxx miles aka 215,000 kilometres. I can't get it to "lock" no matter what I do it just ratchets so it applys "some" tension but as soon as you start turning it and get to where the valve is ready to snap shut the thing gets pressed in by the guide. I made sure to line it up with the black links at the cams and the mark at the bottom.

Replace it. The teeth are worn enough that the tensioner is now suspect.

You're tensioner is just worn down. Replace it. It's a wear and tear item anyway. I had the same issue except mine happened on the dyno while being tuned. You're lucky you're noticing it now. I ended up with 2 bent valves.

Also Is it a new chain or old one? They are prone to stretching I'd replace that also, and if ur turning the engine the wrong way it will retract the tensioner and cause or to skip also

Thanks for the reply's everyone, it seems like the tensioner it's self more than anything, I turned it 1 full 360 and the black link was 15 whole links from the dot in the cam gear. Looking back I was pretty rough with it, I didn't know it had the little orange tab to move that allowed it to slide
