Default Visual differences between motors..

What are the tell-tale signs of a an ITR motor vs. a B16?

Obviously there are the numbers and all the jive...

But if I'm on the internet and some guy says, "Look at my motor!", and I see this:

How can you tell the difference?

From that picture its tough. It has a USDM R valve cover and a USDM R Exhaust manifold heatshield.

Look at the intake manifold. The one that looks like this:

is a GSR (B18C1). And the one that looks like this:

is a Type R (B18C5).

The B16 will have either PGMFI on the intake manifold or will have three little ridges across it. The B18C5 will have a smooth manifold no writing or ridges. But that won't always be 100% accurate because you can always swap manifolds.

easiest way to check the stamping on the block. It will have B18C5 if its an ITR motor and of course B16 if its a B16. Remove the valve cover and see if it has the ITR dual valve springs too.

I know how to check what the engine is if I saw it in person...that's easy. And I know the visual differences between a GSR and a B16/Type R.

But my question was, by just looking at a picture (like the one that I showed you guys), is there an easy way to distinguish between a b16 and a b18c5.

Looks like it's a little bit tougher than I thought.

Without looking at picture names, can you guess which is a B16A and which is a real B18C5 Type R motor? Hard to tell when you've got all of the visuals taken care of, such as ITR intake manifold (looks almost the same as the Skunk2 manifold.. just different shade of grey), valve cover, ITR exhaust manifold and heatsheild..... very hard to tell, eh? Nowadays when I ask somebody to look at their motor, I immediately go to the block stamp first, and then to the head to tell me what year motor (or head if it has been swapped) they're using, and go from there.

And you think it's bad deciphering between B16A and ITR motors, you should see my roommate's LS/VTEC motor with Skunk2 manifold... also looks exactly like an ITR motor at first glance. Any DOHC VTEC B-series motor can be made to look like an ITR motor at first glance.

By those pics... I'd say look at the radiator,
A real B18c5 owner would never let his motor be undercooled!

True... but all 3 motors are in EG hatchbacks.... the bottom two made custom brackets to run an Integra radiator.

I might do the same on my EG hatch and get rid of my Del Sol dual core radiator..... if the H22 allows enough room to.

That's what I was meaning was the motors, I would like to run one too but I need to find an EG first I've got the H22, but no car to put it in! How much of a difference would the Integra rad vs. the dual core Del actually make? Guess I 'll just see what's available when I finally find a hatch.

Default well..there really is no way..

...with those top view pics. The only real way you can tell B18C-R vs. B16A is by the deck height of the block or block numbers....but you can't tell with those particular pics. You can swap any R int. or exh. manifold or valve cover between the 2 engines - so it's kinda tricky.

also mounts used, ITR and GSR use a silver, liquid filled mounts, which are different, also no map sensor on the TB (also different color TB then intake, meaning that its either been changed or that intake has been added)

also ITR will always have a oil cooler most b16a will not also b18c (JDM gsr or ITR) with b16a and various ITR parts will perform and look like a ITR

Default ... that's all fine n' dandy..

but anyone could swap those parts around.
The question was how can you tell from those TOP VIEW pics if the engine is B16A,B16B, B18C-R...it's hard to tell!

-Throttle cable bracket.
-?
Kinda hard to tell.

If you can look closer...
-tranny brace (ITR has a beffy one)
-block stamping

top picture has a steel A/C mount for starters and the T-Body isn't a type-r one so I'd have to say the top picture is a B16a ..?
