Should I start looking for a b20b/z block?
I am facing a dilema. I don't think a cammed out b16 will make enough power for me. Say I get some bad *** cams, and all the other stuff necessary for them to make power. I still won't hit even 190 whp with a b16, plus no torque. And that will cost BIG MONEY!
I am thinking I locate a b20b or z block. I want to go all motor, so I am thinking of stuffing it with either a b17 or b18 crank, aftermarket rods and pistons, get oil squirters installed, and get a crank girdle. Should then be prepared for plenty of rpms. I think a b17 crank will give me 1.8 liters, and a b18 crank will be around 1.9......then put my b16 head on that.......
If I use a b17 crank, I can get rods made to achive a R/S ratio the same as a b16, with the displacement of a b18, then comes some street cams, P&P job, nice header, and then I will be on the way to kickin some ***....should be much faster then a NA b16....
Opinions? Comments.....

Blah! B17A crank my ***. Save you money..and get more power!
A B17A crank is only needed for high revving forced induction...since it lessens the load on the cylinder walls.
If your going all motor..stay with the B20 crank.
Get some nice rods, pistons, and a girdle and youll be able to rev to 8500 without worries.
BTW I saw a B20 shortblock for $750 online...thats not too bad of a price.

Hx_Guy...where did you see the short block for $750? Email me or PM me...I have the money NOW. It will be a good winter project.
Oh, and about the b18 or b17 crank...they will also be good for my piece of mind. Less wear and tear on motor. Plus, I haven't seen any b20s with b17 or b18 cranks. I know there must be some, but I would like to be one of the few.
But then again......2.0 liters.....hmmmm.....

Trust me man..its not worth it.
If you want a 1.8 liter engine..get a B18C.
Getting a B17 crank for a B20 would totally defeat the purpose of the B20 (unless you go mega boost)
Stay with the B20 crank..slap on your B16 head...get rods, pistons, girdle and rev that bad boy to 8500 without worries.
If this makes you feel any better...the pistons speed of a B20 @ 8500 RPMs is like a B18C5 (Type R motor) revving to 8700-8800..which is totally safe...thast like the fuel cut off of a Type R.
