Default PCV Valve? do I need it??

Once again, the title says it all, but I was arguing with a knowledgable DSM'er buddy, and all emissions crap aside, is there anything good to come of a PCV valve? He says hell no, I have no idea..I always thought it helped for a little lubing....who knows

actually yeah there is a purpose for it.
Other then pollution control, it also removes (well the hose connected to the intake, but the valve is part of the system) blowby from the crankcase. It also removes oil vapors from the combustion chamber. Without it you may experience problems with smoke. And in some cases it may cause pressure on the bottom side of the rings from blowby pressurizing the crankcase. The pcv valve also acts as a check valve when the engine backfires to prevent crankcase explosion

that explains the need for a vent, but why does it have to vent into the intake? What about atmospheric discharge?

It's connected to the intake pipe because " When the intake manifold vacuum decreases (wide open throttle) and vacuum in the air cleaner (intake pipe) increases, the pcv valve closes and the blowby (from the vlave cover) is returned through the cylinder head cover breather hose and into the air cleaner (intake pipe).

Nope, it's basically just a check valve.

chunk it!! You will get a little bit of smell from the engine bay with it ran to atmosphere though. PCV is only usually open during vacuum in the intake manifold. So if you are turbo then think about the pressures inside the crank case when at WOT under boost. This is why the DSM guys remove it.

It also dirties up your intake manifold with oil.
