passing smog with dc header
i have been going to the ref trying to get my b18c1 to pass smog. i have been 3 times now and cant figure out what could be making my car not pass. my HC are too high as well as my CO and NO. i was talking to a guy at acura and he said that it was becase of my DC header. he said the DC header dosent get the cat hot enough to make it do its job. has anybody else heard of this?
HC CO NO

so if any of you can be of any help please tell me anything and everything you can.

Re: passing smog with dc header (kwil666)
I haven't met anybody who has passed with a dc header but that's from my own personal experiences. I recomend you use your stock exhaust manifold if you still have it around. that's the best way then take it off after the smog test. That's what I always do.

Re: passing smog with dc header (kwil666)
I passed with the smog ref back in 1998 with my CRX w/B18A and it had a DC 4-2-1 ceramic header. I had to drive 20 miles to the smog ref so on my way there on the highway, I basically drove in 4th gear (witha YS1 GSR tranny.... approx. 5200 rpms) just to keep the cat and headers hot, otherwise the DC ceramic header cools down quickly. Good thing to because the smog ref waited about 10-15 minutes before he started my car up (after the test had started) and only ran it for 3-4 minutes to check the tailpipe & timing, but everything passed w/out any problems.

Re: passing smog with dc header (Newman)
I passed 3 months ago in Cali with b18c1, CTR cams, DC 4-2-1 ceramic, AEM intake, DC exhaust.
This is for a STATE REF BAR sticker too!

If you just rebuilt the engine, and you have a new cat, that's a hard act to follow.
Oil needs to be clean, affects HC and CO, heavy oil can help HC #'s, eg. 20w50 + adding smoke treatment could help. Common fix for mitsubishi 4 bangers with leaky valve seals.
Cooling system needs to work properly, check for stuck coolant temp switch, thermostat, all that affects NOx.
I would check the ignition AND cam timing as well, especially since it was just rebuilt.
I'm sure you probably decarbonized the intake manifold and throttlebody during the rebuild, but if not, that's a good thing to do, helps HC. Try X66a spray from GM dealerships.
Uhmm, what else...
I've seen a case where ignition coil voltage was too low caused a failure. I personally, wouldn't know how to go about checking that tho
Vacuum leaks can induce a lean mixture causing high NOx.
Personally, I'd reinspect the cat, maybe make sure someone welded it on the wrong way, lol, sounds silly i know, and check cam timing...
good luck, let me know what happens....btw i inspect cars, and we do emissions work regularly, and incidentally, I have seen a GSR with a DC cat fail as well. But I never saw the guy again after his initial test, so i dunno what happened.
But barring a modified ECU program or anything wild, a fresh engine, good working 02 sensor and new cat SHOULD pass...

Re: passing smog with dc header (b20guy)
wow thanks for all the info. i am going in next week. my plain is to put the stock header back on and use the cat of a 2000 gsr and my friends pipping of his hatch. my cat is welded to the pipping so it would cost some money to have them cut and reweld it all. ill let you know what happends.
