Default oil in cylinder on new motor

I just picked up a b18b1 that had been stored for quite a while and some of that time on its side. The head is good the head gasket is good and so are the valves. Could it be bad piston rings? I just don't want to tear the whole engine down. Any ideas, areas to examine especially well would be appreciated. Thanks

The problem won't just go away without fixing the problem. Sell it.... or learn how to break down a motor.

I've broken down plenty of motors I was just curious if it could have been something other than the rings. I have some CP pistons and some skunk2 rods I can use so I'm thinking ill just toss them in. I've had engines (all big block ford with pushrods) and I know in those if you store them for an extended period of time you can get oil that'll creep down the valves. Though that is a completely different design. One should not make assumptions as to the abilities of someone just because they're new. I've been working on engines for almost 30 years my friend. I just wanted any ideas for something Ive missed, being an engine that was never run, sitting in a dealership warehouse for 20 years one would think the rings would be okay.
