Default OBD1 or OBD2 B18b in a 96 dx?

Hey guys, I'm getting a swap done pretty quick here and I'm just in the process of finding an engine. The guys at the shop have a B18b wo/tranny but it's OBD1. Now they say it will work with some sort of harness adapter, but how reliable will it be? Should I just go with an OBD2 engine, or would I be safe to go with this OBD1 engine that they have already? I really appreciate any help guys, I was kinda thrown into all this in the past week since my rod bearings are shitting the bed as we speak.

Also, what sort of prices should I be expecting for a complete B18B engine plus install? In canadian prices of course.

sorry, I'm not from CAN so I can't give you any price tips.

But as far as staying OBD2 or going OBD1..that all depends on you and your local smog laws and if you abide by them or not. If you don't abide by them, by all means go OBD1.

OBD1 has advantages over OBD2, mainly because you can have the ecu reprogrammed for performance gains and/or to delete any of the extra OBD2 sensor (2nd 02 & CKF sensors).

Although here's some factors you need to consider:

- you'll need to buy an OBD1 LS ecu & an ecu jumper harness that will convert your OBD2a civic to OBD1

- Its best if you reuse your 96 DX engine harness on the OBD1 LS motor and find yourself these OBD2 LS parts: distributor, altnernator, and injectors (or you can reuse your DX injectors). Doing this will cut back on any wiring tasks. You can try and re-wire the OBD1 distributor, alternator & injectors to work with your OBD2 DX engine harness, but its not gonna be fun...thats why I suggest to find OBD2 counterparts so all will be plug n' play.

- If the LS motor doesn't come with these parts, you'll need to get them in order for the motor to completely bolt-in and work in your DX:
- any 94-01 integra shift linkage
- any 94-01 integra axles + halfshaft
- any 94-01 integra front tranny mount
- any 94-01 integra A/C mount
- any 94-01 integra rear engine "L" bracket or 99+ Si coupe "L" bracket
- Si coupe timing belt-side black block mount (dual post)

sweet, I was hoping you would post katman, great info.

My engine finally **** the bed once and for all tonight, so I'm gonna have to get this done right away. I'm still leary about doing the B18b for $4500 (can) plus tax's, or the D16 for $2000. I'm afraid I'm gonna get ripped off or the engine will go. Guess that's just jitters though.

I did however find a 99 LS motor locally, but it doesn't come with anything, so I'll need to get axles, tranny, starter, etc etc. This motor is $1200 btw. This might be an option if I can source out the rest of the parts.

What things will be different with a 99 engine?

-- Nothing will be different from what I've already mentioned, the 99 B18B is totally compatible with your 96 DX, just make sure you reuse your DX engine harness; integra engine harness won't work in your civic.

Here's another one for you Katman.

I talked to another shop, and a few others, they all had nothing good to say about the first shop I had talked to.

So I was given the option of a JDM D15 vtec engine, one with 127hp, sohc. I havn't heard much about this motor, other than it's from the gth gen civics.

Would these be a good option as well? This new mechanic is trying to get me the most bang for my buck.

I wish this process was way easier, it sucks now that my engine is totally fubar'd as I have to do this fast, ugh.

-- thats the EG4 VTi engine which is equivilent to our 92-95 Si/EX (D16Z6) engine, but with a 1.5L block. Everything else is exactly like a D16Z6 on the JDM D15. I guess this would be an OK option, but its not the 'best bang for your buck' option, but then again, you living in Canada, perhaps it IS the best 'bang for ya buck' option. *scratches head*. How much are you able to get this D15/VTi engine for?

It is definitely better than your DX engine though. Although, If I were you, I'd really try & find a B-series engine.

Katman, I'll know in the next day or so exactly how much this D15 will cost me. Like everyone else with a civic, I of course want a bigger engine, but I wanna keep it under 5 grand after it's said and done.

dude, 5 grand is MORE than enough to go B-series and waay to much for a SOHC VTEC engine. You can easily buy a Type-R engine for that much & maybe keep some change.

Inquire with sheng at JHPUSA.COM for a motor.

I know that 5 grand should be more than enough for a B18B swap, but not according to the shops in Saskatoon. I e-mailed Sheng and hopefully will hear back from him. He didn't have any B18B swaps on his site, but maybe he can get one.

Anybody know of any good shops ANYWHERE in Saskatchewan? I know there was a shop down in regina where the guy built a smoking fast Ford Festiva that was featured in Sport Compact Car, but I can't remember the companies name.

I just talked to Jerome at SOHfast.com, and he may have a B18B from a 96-97 integra. That would be about 3500 canadian for that engine. Said he might have one in canada too. Install I would think wouldn't be more than a grand for a swap.

How is everyone's experience with http://www.SOHFast.com?

Well, I just ordered a B18B from a 97 integra from http://www.sohfast.com. Total price was $2700 shipped for the complete changeover, man I can't wait to get this thing installed!

Is there anything I should replace on the engine/tranny, or anything else before I install the engine? I just don't wanna have to replace things later on when it would be easier to do it now, and less expensive.

Ok guys, engine is in, car is at the shop, but I have one question. Should my entire engine harness from the D16 be used on the 96 B18b? Will the whole harness bolt up or will there be anything different?

You need to reuse your existing 96 DX engine harness on the 97 LS engine.

Also, you'll have to perform the IACV fix to your DX harness or else your LS ecu is gonna throw a code 14 and the car will idle like ****.
