I posted this in the Hybrid forum but didn't get any response, and I need to know this infor right away before my engine grenades on me.

I'm getting a swap done pretty quick here and I'm just in the process of finding an engine. The guys at the shop have a B18b wo/tranny but it's OBD1. Now they say it will work with some sort of harness adapter, but how reliable will it be? Should I just go with an OBD2 engine, or would I be safe to go with this OBD1 engine that they have already? I really appreciate any help guys, I was kinda thrown into all this in the past week since my rod bearings are shitting the bed as we speak.

Also, what sort of prices should I be expecting for a complete B18B engine plus install? In canadian prices of course.

I thought a B18b is ODB II engine. You can get a OBDI to OBDII harness.

I guess pre 96's are all OBD1.

Will I run into any problems with the OBD1 system though? I've heard mixed reviews on doing this.

Many counties require that a 96+ vehicle is OBDII. You may want to check this before making your decision.

OK, I just got some prices for 2 installs. Prices include all parts plus instalation.

B18B, from Japan, OBD1 = $4500+tax ($3234us) for everything including OBD1-2 conversion harness.

D16y7 from 2000 civic dx = $2000 w/tax ($1437us) for the engine, but I'd keep my current tranny.

So what would be my best bet guys? I really don't know if the 30 extra hp of the B18 is worth $2500, dam, tough decisions.

jesus christ where are you getting these prices from. for the price you are paying for an ls you could buy a gsr motor. god damn.

4500 for B18B is way to expensive.

I just finish my swap and here is what i spend:
1240.00 on the Complete Swap.
200.00 on New Flywheel
200.00 on New Clutch
80.00 For new OBD II ls ECU
300.00 for MISC parts.
150.00 for new TIming Belt Water Pump and cam seal.
Pay a guy 400.00 to do my wiring harness do all the maintance..

OBD1-2 harness is only 75-150 buck..

You guys know all those prices are Canadian funds right?

In US dollars the B18b is actually $3234 installed plus tax's, that includes all parts as well.

The D16y7 is $1437 US installed, tax's in.

You shouldn't run into any problems with OBDI if your shop does it right. Infact, most tuners prefer OBDI because it's easier to tune. If your government doesn't require OBDII, i'd say go with it. I have to get "passed" every year because there isnt an OBDII ECU that's compatible with my engine

So do you guys think it's worth the extra to go with the B18b? Are those prices I have decent as well? I trust the guys at the shop, as they are super nice and helped me out a bunch.

still $3234 is alot for an ls swap installed. my friend paid like 3 grand or less for a b16 sir 2 swap installed into his del sol.

I was told by them that the motor will be from japan, so will the fact that it's jdm make any difference?

Thats way too expensive...and I think the JDM and USDM is the same for the B18B

My engine finally **** the bed once and for all tonight, so I'm gonna have to get this done right away. I'm still leary about doing the B18b for $4500 (can) plus tax's, or the D16 for $2000. I'm afraid I'm gonna get ripped off or the engine will go. Guess that's just jitters though.

I did however find a 99 LS motor locally, but it doesn't come with anything, so I'll need to get axles, tranny, starter, etc etc. This motor is $1200 btw. This might be an option if I can source out the rest of the parts.

What things will be different with a 99 engine?

btw guys, sorry for posting in two sections, but it seems like 2 totally different groups of people are in each forum, and I'm trying to get as much help as I can.

well, for starters, the 99 motor is obd II, so you'll have less problems electrically. I believe, in essence, you can use your stock wiring harness since you don't have to wire for vtec, there may be minute differences as your car is obdIIa and the motor is obdIIb(99-00) but for the most part, everything will work.

If you use the 99 Motor also besure to try to find a 96 LS ecu since your car is a 96. The reason being is that on the 97 and above car they have sensor in the gas tank (to detect if the gas cap is open) and in the charcoal can.

Since your car is a 96 you do not have those sensor.

Ok, I talked to another shop today, and I was given the option of a jdm D15b vtec, how would that be? I'm assuming it's OBD1 as well. He's trying to get me the most cost effective motor without breaking the bank.

96-99 B18B = OBD2a
00-01 B18B = OBD2b

96 Civic DX = OBD2a stock

There should be no problem swaping the OBD1 engine into the car....OBD2-OBD1 harness will be needed. What are the specific parts your looking for to make the swap happen???

obd1 is easier to tune. exactly what "mixed reviews" have you heard

mixed reviews as in it causes more headaches, or makes the install harder. If it's been done before, and done easily, then I'm not too worried.

Does anyone have any info on this D15b vtec with 130hp? or however much it is. Is it a decent engine, even though I'll be losing .1 liters?

what about a b20? since you are looking at an ls swap, a b20 longblock is what about $800 maybe less at some places. then im sure the shop can get you a b series tranny.
