Default New to hondas........which engine for 92+ hatch????

Hi there everyone. Im pretty new to the world of Honda, coming from Toyota with a vast amount of knowledge about them, but time for something new, so here I am. Im selling my MR2 so I can build something different(at least to me) and easier to work on and what not. So anyways, here we go. Im looking for a 92+ hatch to purchase, what should I look for? Id prefer to get one that already has been swapped, as I dont have much time right now to do one myself. So what engine is ideal. I know the B16 and B18 are lighter than say the H22, B20, etc.....but which exact engines should I look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I need to find something soon. Thanks everyone.

since nobody said anything yet b18c

B18C: great for daily driving, boosted or n/a

B16A: great engine, cheaper then b18c, benefits alot with boost

H22: a little heavier but not so noticeable. more torque and hp then b18c & b16a.

still it depends on what you plan on doing to the car and engine.

imo: you dont need one with a swap. stay with the sohc. buy a 92-95 si hatch, it has a d16z6 build it and it can be just as fast as the b+h sieries, it will take longer and be harder to get there, but totaly worth it.

yes that is true, but the d16 is even lightes than those. you will be able to pick it up for cheaper too. a stock si is way cheaper than an h22eg.

umm... yeah, SOHCs can be cool, but there also a pain in the *** and there isnt nearly as much of a myriad of aftermarket parts like there is for the B-series... I would say B18C for NA or a LS for turbo... the B18C can turbo well too, but it has a rather high compression which would have to be dealt with, unlike the LS, which is practicly designed to turbo (even though it has mediocre stock figures), and are much easyer to find/ are way cheaper.

ohh yeah, and if you wanna go with SOHC (which can be fun, cause you wont be like every other guy with a swap) definately go with the d16z6... i had one stock in my Si hatch. Its a great motor for being sohc.

damn not one of these h22 vs Type R posts again. Im sick of reading these lol. If i were you I prob would go with something like a 92-95 hatch with nitrous. Most of those i have seen with nitrous run better times that b-series with nitrous. Just a thought

No SOHC motors, sorry. DOHC is a must. I live in Texas, so smog isnt a problem if that matters any.

And BTW, I am willing to trade my 91 MR2 Turbo 5SFE for a swapped hatch in good condition if I cant get it sold first. If anyone knows of anyone interested then let me know. It wont let me post in the For Sale forums, or otherwise I would post that there.

Jason, I have a couple of Toyota Newb questions for you:
I've been thinking lately about doing the opposite of what you're doing and moving on to the toyota world. What are the better years of MR2's to build? I've seen a lot of people build the 91 and 92's. Is it a must to start with the turbo chasis?

As for as for vehicle pricing, 91 and 92 are the best years. If you want an immediate kick in the pants, than yes the Turbo model is your best option. But dont rule out the N/A model, they are still great cars that are a blast to drive. And the aftermarket support for the N/A is ever growing and there are some making some pretty good power. Than of course there are the few like myself that have done custom turbo setups for the 5SFE, and been successfull. The fastest MR2 in the states is actually a turbo 5SFE that runs low 10's, high 9's. They are truely great cars that are before their time in terms of styling and performance, and seem to have no limits in performance and handling......just all depends on your wallet just like any other car, just the MR2 is easier to get there.

Also, you can just get a N/A model(they are noticably cheaper and usually less abused) and swap in the 3SGTE from the Turbo model. Or do the most recent popular swap and install the 3.0 liter V6 engine. Either are pretty easy, just require some wiring.

No not the 3.0L inline six from the Supra(wont even come near fitting). Im speaking of the 1MZ 3.0L V6 from the Camry, Solara, etc. Its an all aluminum motor that in some models makes well over 200 hp. And plus, it actually weighs less than the 3SGTE and 5SFE, and fits the engine compartment very nicely.

I cant believe no one is mentioning the ls b18a1, more torque than b16 and dont have to worry about vtec lines and messing with other stuff, I personally feel a bone stock(header, intake, exhaust) ls engine is quicker than b16 with the same stuff, but thats just my experience.

b18a1? If you go b18a1, you have to worry about getting the right years. Some models of those only make like 130 hp or so. I think it's the 90/91.

If you want an LS, stay OBDI and get a b18b.

Well Im in contact with a few peeps with cars for sale and all are pretty stock(no swap). So now my question is where is the best/most affordable place to get an enigne/tranny/ecu/etc for the swap? Ive pretty much decided that if I have to do the swap myself then Im just gonna do a B16a with an LSD tranny. Who has the best prices on these?

I this exact setup. '92 hatch with a '93 ls engine which is the 140HP version. I did the swap mostly since I got the entire longblock for $800 but it's just fine all things considered. I'm planning on going turbo as soon as I gather the proper funds.

Jason, is your MR2 currently running in the Auto Trader? There's one in there going for about $12,000 with supposedly a crap load of after market goodies. Is that you? If not how much are you looking to get for your Mister2?
