ls vtec
ok whats really the deal with this whole LS vtec thing, i mean yeah it creates alot of power. but i have heard that it has a crappy r/s and that when your pistons at actualy in the "movment" they arnt nessacerily going straight down they are pussing at a horizontal angle, and there will be more stress on the sides and in the center of the rod which could cause it to break.
the reason i wanna know is cause alot friends have decided they wanted to be like the rest of america and do it, me ill stay with the good ol' b16a or b18c.

Re: ls vtec (Aesop)
a properly built lsvtec done by a reputable shop, or a person with good honda and engine building knowledge is very reliable.

Re: ls vtec (ninefivehatch)
like anything else... most of the people dunno anything about lsvtec and just spit out what someone else said.
so dont take anything to heart
Here are a few reasons why you hear so many bad things about LSVTEC
1) easy to blame- EVERYONE likes to blame something
My engine broke, its stupid LSVTEC's fault
2) backyard mecanics- beyond a repair manual
people dont torque right, put headgaskets on upside down, dont do lsvtec right
3) LSVTEC on 150k mile motor
The motor was running so so w/ stock head... now at 8k RPM and worn bearings... you spin a rod bearing
4) Stock ECU with RPM activated vtec switch...
Yah thats smart... get a vtec ecu cheap ***
Everyone looks to blame their problems on something. So when their LSVTEC motor breaks... they blame it on "LSVTEC just isnt reliable"
and the rumors start.
now then you say... well a b16 is more reliable then a LSVTEC.. sure it is... but a D15Z1 VX motor is more reliable then a b16 motor... does that mean you shouldnt put a b16 in your civic VX?
In the end, both will last a very long time if maintained properly.. and driven like any other car. Honestly, if you drive an LSVTEC just like a regular LS... do you think it is going to wear out any faster?
Like anything else, it comes down to your driving style and how you take care of your car... that will determine the life of any engine. Hondas can still take quite a beating, lsvtec or not.
