h22 swap problems
well, just finsihed swapping an h22a into my 93 prelude, and have a couple problems... first, i'm getting a CEL, but i can't find the service connector thing to jump so it'll flash the code.
The problems are, besides the CEL, the car feels like it misfires during acceleration, and there's pretty bad power loss. I'm using distributor, and plugs (which are about 3 weeks old) off of my old h23, so i know those work, but the wires came with the motor.
Also, I'm not sure if it's related to anything, but, my tach isn't work either, but speedo is.
any suggestions?
thanks

Blue plug, located underneath the dash, up by the bottom of the glove box, on the passenger side. Has 2 wires going into it.... brown wire and blue wire. Jump them with a paperclip and your engine light on your cluster will start blinking. If you can't find the plug, you can always jump ECU location D4 to an ECU ground plug and that'll also make the engine light start to flash.

Could be a number of things but first you need to see what codes you're throwing. Otherwise, it's most likely your distributor/ignition that's giving you the missing problems. Also, make sure you have all of the grounds in the right place, but most likely you have a set of wires crossed, like your CYP or CKP or TDC wires are crossed. Did you use a JDM H22A that comes with an internal coil?

Kind of goes back to the last part of what I said about the distributor wiring. Are you using a JDM H22A distributor w/internal coil? Your 93 Prelude uses an external coil and if it's wired up incorrectly, you'll get a code and your car will run like the way you described.
First thing to do.... check what codes you're getting.

hey man, thanks for the info... you're definitely right, I need to find out that code first....I tried looking for the connector plug, but I can't find it....its a little dark, and all i have is a little flashlight...so I'm just gonna take it to autozone tomorrow and theyll tell me the code for free..... but as far as the tach not working, that leads me to thinking the TPS may be bad... but I guess it could be anything....
as far as the distributor.... i used my dist. from the h23 w/ext coil. But, I used my engine harness from the h23 as well, so the plug for the coil is there and should be all the same. I was told the dist. from the h23 would work fine with the h22a... is this correct?
also, about what i said about it misfiring, that's really the wrong term... it's more like hesitation... but... turned out that i hadn't switched out the plugs... so I did, and that seemed to fix the bad hesitation for now.

the h23 distr is the smae as the h22 one.
if the code is one of the distributor sensors it puts you into limp mode, not allowing vtec to engage.
if the tach isnt working its most likely ignition related since the wire that provides that signal is the blue one on the 2 wire plug on the distributor.

ok, i'm getting a code 22, which is the vtec oil pressure switch i believe. I'm almost positive I wired it up right, since on my 93si, the vtec solenoid and pres. sw. wires were already run to the engine bay (near the shock tower) on my h23 harness. So basically all I did was cut the plugs off the h22a engine harness that i didn't use, and extend the two wires to the sensors. But the vtec oil pres sw also has a ground. So for the ground, I just ran it to the ground location which is located on the block, almost right next to the vtec oil pres sw. Will any ground work for this, or is there a specific ground location for the vtec oil pres. sw.?
Also, I was doing a search on code 22 and I saw one post which said to check the oil level. I always thought it took 4 qts to fill these motors up (which is what used to fill up my h23), but I put 4 in and it was barely touching the bottom of the dip stick on the h22a. So I added about 1/2 qt more, and it's still pretty far below the cold level on the stick. I didn't want to add anymore since I wasn't sure and I didn't want to overfill it. Should it take 5+ qts of oil to fill the h22a?

.... and we have vtec !!!
well I fixed it... turned out the vtec oil pres. sw. wire which was prewired to the engine bay of my 93si was bad. I tested the connectivity of the wire from the ecu to the switch and nothin.... it was open somewhere along the line...... so i ran a new wire from the ecu to the switch, and bingo, CEL went off, and amazingly enough, the tach started working as well.... not exactly sure how those to are connected, but i have vtec now, and that's all that matters
thanks to all for the help, and the info about the oil... I went ahead and topped it off. I ended up putting 5.25 qts in to fill it up
