Default Throwing codes?

What do people mean when they use the term "throwing codes"? I'm swapping my h23 with a jdm h22, and i've heard people say that if somethings not right, it will start throwing codes. What does this mean exactly.

Is the check engine light (CEL)(orange) on or flashing. If yes then the computer has detected a problem. If no then the computer has not detected a problem.

To find out how to read the CEL codes, you have to bridge the wires in the dash, behind and to the right of the ashtray (5th gen). There are two wires connected to a black adapter. You have to put a wire into each of these to bridge the wires so they are touching. After this, turn your car onto the accessory position and watch the CEL and count the flashes. The long flashes are multiples of ten and the quick flases are represented by one's. Example...six long and one short="61". This is the O2 sensor. There are sites/threads with the CEL codes on them so you can distinguish which code is for what designated error. Hope this helps.
