H22 civic cable shifter alignment and grinding problems
i have a solution to some shifting problems i've been having with the H in my EK.
the lever feels like it's binding, i'm grinding 5th every time, and overall it feels WAYY too notchy
as shown in the H22 civic FAQ thread, here's a pic of poison's shifter install. take note of the extreme angle at which the shifter cables go down after leaving the shifter base, it's even worse on an EK chassis cause the crossmember is lower and much larger:
well, i did some prelude searching and noticed that the OEM prelude cable position is almost completely the opposite (yes i know that's a forbidden shift lever)
so, the solution i came up with is to raise the rear of the shifter assembly base about an inch by using the OEM prelude spacer, drilling out the base of the shifter assumbly to fit the OEM civic shifter bolt location, and bolting it down with the OEM civic bolts. this makes the angle much less severe, especially on the cable that is lower.
it completely fixed my 5th gear grind, and the lever moves much more freely now. some of the notchiness has been eliminated. it took out all the binding i had been experiencing over the past six months, too. overall, i'm very happy. shifter position is not much different, so it only took a second to get use to.

i too noticed that as well when test fitting and looking at some of the pictures here on honda-tech. Most people from what i can tell, seems like they cut the hole for the cables so close to the shifter causing a pretty tight bend in the cables.
I cut mine quite a ways back for a nice strait flow in the cables with no tight bends

what i did was make the holes for the shift cables more towards the firewall. mine is pretty much on the part where the wall starts to bend under the car (idunno if that make sense to you). but i never have grinding problems and it shifts fine
so thats another option. i remember reading it on here a long time ago and it works

nice work, I have the cables in my DA routed underneath, basically i cut a hole a big hole and mounted the shifter box underneath the car, Never had a problem with grinding or binding, but sure does look ugly!! wish I would have mounted it like you did goin for the stock look. Does the dash piece fit in there with the shifter box mounted like that too?

You should insulate them so the lubricating grease in the sleeves doesn't burn out.

the hole that you made for the shifter cable should have been higher. more towards the firewall. hell, mine is basically on that bend where the floor turns into the firewall.
like other people have already stated, you gotta set it up so there arent any hard bends in the cable
