Finally got my k20A civic!!! Awesome...just some problems!!!
I just got my Civic ES2 with K20A Type R engine from an DC5R from Japan! It is my first hybrid car, and it is also my first Type R car...WOOOOAAAAAWWWWW!!!
The car is awesome...fast, and very driveable! It feels strong all the way, from 1,000 to 8,500...compared to a B16 civic I drove before, that did not have much torque before the VTEC kicks in.
anyway, I got a K20A with Hondata box, and I have a bit of a knocking problem...it knocks at the 2,500 to 4,500 range. The guy who installed said it is becuase our gas here is only 95 octane, as compared to JDM engine which is tuned to 100 octane in Japan...not sure if he is full of it or not. So now I am afraid I might blow the engine or something...but we are scheduling to go to a dyno with hondata guy to fix the tuning.
Any ideas on what else it could be? Knocking is basically premature combustion due to high compression for the gas right?

yeah man you know the deal already. get it retuned asap, take out some timing in that range until the knocking stops. japan has higher octane but i really doubt its 100, and if you have 95 thats freaking great. everyone in cali is running 91 and they have no issues, im fortunate to have 93 here in NY.

I've heard that some people in cali have had knocking issues with the k20a on 91 octane ...
solution?
get hondata ... or buy 100 octane and mix it with 91 ( = 95 octane)
japan uses RON ... the k20a's recommend octane use is 98 ron (iirc) .. but is equal to about 95 PON (us octane ratings)
