Default Engine Temp Guage is stuck on HOT!!

My engine temp gauge is shooting up to hot even though my engine is completely cold...Is there a senor on the engine some where i can look at to see if it is loose or is my Si gauge acting up? This is happening to my 96 EK hatch with a 99/00 SI gauge cluster.....i have a 96 EK with a 96 GSR motor and 99 SI gauge cluster

Check your thermostat. Might be stuck closed, thus causing your engine to overheat. Eitherway, take it out and try driving the car.... if your temp stays down, then you know you need to replace the thermostat. If not, and you still have the same problem, then it's something else but you've at least taken away the most common problem out of the equation. BTW, driving w/out the thermostat won't hurt anything... just takes the car longer to warm up.

Personally I don't think this is the problem if it tachs your gauge even when you initially start the motor... I would check the resistance over the ECT gauge on the head... I'm pretty much willing to bet that you read zero ohms over it... It would be the same as if you straight grounded the wire going to the ECTG... NO resistance ='s HOT on the gauge... If this is the case get a new ECTG and you'll be set... If it checks out good then see if you're ECTG wire is shorting/grounding off somewhere... Easiest way to do this is to check for continuity from the ECU pinout over ground... It's as simple as that... If you need anything else let me know... Peace
