engine surging...anybody ever heard or experienced this problem....?
ok, i have a h22a in a civic ek. now this surging happens at idle, it drops to about 800 and revs to about 1600 rpm constantly at idle(up down up down up down, etc...
) now when i first experienced this problem, i replaced the fast idle valve, flushed coolant and replaced fluid, and messed with idle screw...and ever since about that time, i never had the problem again. well when i went to the track the other night..all of a sudden after one of the runs it started doing it again, and is still doing it. this is pissing me off. can somebody please help!? thanks

Check the same things you checked before. Also check vacuum lines. That has to be one of the issues.
Keep us posted.

i had the same exact problem. let the heater run inside while you're driving for an hour. replace spark plugs. reset computer. now my car idles fine.
why replace spark plugs...it started when i first had the motor swapped...and i had brand new bosch plugs put in there
what kind of ecu are you using? Would the throttle body have an effect? I think I have heard about that being one of the problems
there are so many things that it could be. Check all your vaccuim lines, sensors, and your TB gasket. I had the same problem for a long time. Turned out to be my tb gasket.

ok, Im not sure i was hoping someone else might back that up, I thought i heard that you can adjust or tighten something to prevent it, but maybe not.

I know exactly what it is!
you see... hondas do not have chokes like most domestics and v8s.
hondas have a TPS (throttle position sensor) if that goes bad it will cause that annoying surge. i have dealt with many cars, especially d series motors, that have had this same problem, and that has been the problem 90% of the time. the part that really sucks is that you either have to buy the part from honda (>$100) or put a different throttle body w/ a good sensor onto the intake. Another problem you might have is that the sensor doesnt clip in or bolt on it has those really annoying rivets that hold it in, so if you dont have the resourses to do it yourself you have to have honda do it which = BIG DOLLARS.
-----but first check your vacuum lines to be certain it isnt them. vacuum lines were the other 10% of times i have seen with unsteady idle (surge).

I had that annoying surge too... it ended up being the FIV. The plastic nylon screw had unscrewed it self all the way out. I took it off the car and opened the plate with the 2 bolts and screwed the plastic piece back in.
