Default EF-B18C/P72 ECU-VSS

Anyone know if the VSS signal from the stock EF CRX cluster will work with the P72 (OBD1 GSR) ECU to activate Vtec? I'm using a '93 LS transmission, so there is a speedometer cable coming from the transmission, not VSS wires.
Are there any tricks to fool the ECU?
Also, does the ECU use the VSS for anything else?

Thanks
Ben
